Pocket Watch Case

What makes this 4oz coin silver case by AWCO particularly interesting is the solid gold ring applied directly beneath the crown. It scans at around 10-12ct while the bale was originally gold filled most of that has worn away to the brass underneath. The case is in excellent condition with no dings or dents and all mechanisms work as they should. It just needs a crystal and a worthy movement and toys have yourself a beautiful timepiece. I was planning on fitting it with an 18s Howard movement and keeping it but just don’t have time for any more projects. Please ask any questions prior to purchasing. This Sterling Silver & Multi Color Gold Hunter Case Fancy Dial Elgin Pocket Watch is a vintage timepiece from the early 20th century (Circa 1915). Featuring a mechanical manual gilt movement with 7 jewels and Roman numerals on a fancy blue and white enameled dial with silver highlights. This pocket watch is equipped with a full hunter closure and a snap caseback. The beautiful fancy dial is in extra fine condition. The polished sterling silver case has rose gold and yellow gold floral decoration. The Keystone case is in extra fine condition with no dents or dings. Absolutely beautiful hand tooled metal work. The intials EP are on one side while a small engraved village scene is on the other side. The case is marked Keystone Sterling. All covers open and close appropriately. The watch is approximately 42mm in diameter, size 6. Ornate pierced Louis XIV hands add to the ornate beauty of this watch. The watch was made in the United States. This Elgin pocket watch also includes features such as a seconds hand and a 12-hour dial, adding to its functionality and classic design. The watch runs well and sets time smoothly. The watch has not been timed or tested for accuracy, although informally it seems to keep good time. This watch is absolutely beautiful with its fancy dial and ornate gold and silver hunter case. The watch works as it should. Some yellowing on the glass and the back is chipped, pictured. A very clean late model verge escapement pocket watch in sterling silver. The watch is ticking and the movement is very clean, it winds smoothly. However it only seems to run when laid face down or mostly face down. I wound it about 2/3 to 3/4 and it ran for about 20 h face down, the last time I checked it, at about 16 h, it was keeping excellent time (within 1 minute – of course I cannot guarantee that and accuracy would change with orientation). A competent watch maker should be able to address the issue of the watch only running face down. The fusee chain appears to be in good order. The case hallmarks (inner and outer match) dates this piece to 1865. Both the case and outer case are original – the case serial matches the movement serial. So, that is very late for a verge movement – if you want a verge in your collection for practical use, this one would be an excellent candidate if you can just get the orientation issue sorted out. The only other obvious issue is that the crystal is acrylic and very scuffed – it could be replaced or possibly polished. A domed crystal works well with the outer case design. The case and outer case open and close well, the hinges are good. It’s a key wind watch and the key is included. The movement is signed Hen. ^y Filtness (Henry Filtness) Rotherfield. Rotherfield is in Sussex, England, and there was a Henry Filtness there who was an inn keeper, farmer and coal merchant in the mid 1800s. My research indicates that his son moved to Australia in the mid 1800s. So, we can speculate that this was Henry the Inn Keeper’s watch, and that it came to Aus with his son. I’m not aware of any Rotherfield, or England generally, based watchmaker by the same name. The case is not monogrammed, although it is a Henry Griffin case. The movement features a hand pierced balance arm, with engraved grotesque face. The dial is plain faced enamel with roman numerals, and is in very good condition. See my other listings. I DO NOT KNOW if this case is made of gold or not. I mean, it has a good-tone coloring on the inside, but it doesn’t have any indication inside the case whether it is or not. All it says is “Registered Trade Mark” and it has symbols of a crown, two fish, and a “plus sign” symbol (see photos). I tried to research on the Internet what type of case it is, but I couldn’t find anything. Please view all the photos and you can make your own determination about this.
