A beautiful example of late 19th-century Swiss decorative silverwork. Dating to the late Victorian / Belle Époque period, this richly decorated Swiss pocket watch case was produced by Perret & Berthoud of Locle, one of Switzerland’s historic watchmaking centers. The exterior is adorned with intricate ivy, grapevine, and floral motifs executed in traditional niello work, a decorative technique in which engraved silver is filled with a dark metallic alloy to create striking contrast and depth. The resulting black-and-silver surface highlights the flowing botanical forms associated with the Art Nouveau movement and the decorative arts of the Belle Époque era. At the center rests an untouched cartouche framed by the surrounding niello decoration.
