Antique French Rosewood & Mother of Pearl Medal or Pocket Watch Box, Case, Etui. All items and photos are the express property of Antiques & Uncommon Treasure. No reproduction without prior written consent. We’ll be sending out sale notices and special deals to our’Favorites’ customers. Gold embossed lettering on the interior’s rich purple silk lining tells us this box was made for or by E. CCressier, 93, Grand rue, Besancon, France. It further tells us that his medals are worked in both gold and silver. The box here shown is fitting for a fine piece of work in silver or gold, and while the medal no longer is with it, it is a fine antique all on its own. One could certainly use this for a smallish pocket watch, the type ladies used, and it is open to the top of fitting for the fob or top of a watch, too. That said, allow me to point out the elaborate and beautiful mother of pearl shield that decorates the solid rosewood box, as the monogram seems to me to be L and W intertwined. Well crafted and beautifully preserved, we’d date this box to late 1800s. Very good to excellent condition for age and type, no chips or loss to the wood, and the mother of pearl inset cartouche shilled is beautifully monogrammed, as well as preserved. Solid wood, not a veneer, it is of generous size and could display a lady’s watch and chain for gifting or for display. Silk velvet and silk satin line the interior and remain in very good condition, as well. Push-button opening working well, clasps tightly. Piano hinged, it is beautifully crafted throughout. We’re easy to deal with. You are very important! Our fine inventory is very important. And your ranking of our performance is also very important! ANTIQUE PAIR CASE STERLING SILVER VERGE FUSEE, WORKING. We have received expert advise that this is a later version of a pocket watch by Jonh (sic) Ward, Fort Street, London No2682 John Ward was listed as working in FORE St London between the years 1784 – 1799. It is thought that this was assembled in the late 1800′s, not of the 1790′s era. In working order, winds nicely, ticking very slowly though, and not tested for accuracy of time, so will need at least a service or at worst a repair, has sat idle for years. The Sterling Silver case has no hallmarks, but does have s serial number 3216 & a makers mark VD and is possibly American in origin. Dial has a few cracks, missing minute hand, no glass. The outer case approx 66mm in diameter & the inner case 51mm in diameter. We are constantly adding to our ever increasing range and have a large assortment of American Railroad Grade Pocket Watches. American Railroad Pocket watches. Were amongst the highest grade watches made, having been made for the railways makes them a great choice to use every day, mainly for their durability over time. Their lower production quantities and of course their high grade movements make them also a great gift or investment. A typical railroad’s requirements for a pocket watch in the early 20th century might include. Only American-made watches may be used (depending on availability of spare parts). Only open-faced dials, with the stem at 12 o. Minimum of 17 functional jewels in the movement. Size 16 or 18 only. Maximum variation of 30 seconds (approximately 4 seconds daily) per weekly check. Watch adjusted to at least five positions: Face up and face down (the positions a watch might commonly take when laid on a flat surface); then crown up, crown pointing left, and crown pointing right (the positions a watch might commonly take in a pocket). Occasionally a sixth position, crown pointing down, would be included. Adjusted for severe temperature variance and isochronism (variance in spring tension). Indication of time with bold legible Arabic numerals, outer minute division, second dial, heavy hands. Lever used to set the time (no risk of inadvertently setting the watch to an erroneous time, when winding the watch with the stem). Anti-magnetic protection (after the advent of diesel-electric locomotives). The minimum requirements were raised several times as watch-making technology progressed, and the watch companies produced newer, even more reliable models. By WW2, many railroads required watches that were of a much higher grade (as many as 23 jewels, for example) than those made to comply with the original 1891 standard. _gsrx_vers_625 GS 6.9.7 (625). SOUTHAMPTON STREET, STRAND, LONDON. 18TH CENTURY PAIR CASE VERGE FUSEE POCKET WATCH. RECENTLY SERVICED IN GOOD STRONG WORKING ORDER. A fine colourful pair case verge fusee doctors watch, movement signed John Kentish Jnr, Southampton Street, Strand, London and serial numbered 1270. A rare eighteenth century English verge fusee pair case pocket watch. The gilded full plate verge fusee movement has applied engraved foliate decoration surrounding a large finely pierced and engraved matching balance cock set with a large Diamond endstone. It has a Tompion disc regulator and a gilt metal dust cover. The white enamel dial is signed John Kentish JUNr Southampton Street Strand. The subsidiary dial for the time of day has black Roman hour numerals, an outer minute index track with Arabic numerals at 15 min intervals and gold coloured hands. The time is key set at the centre of the subsidiary dial. The seconds are indicated by the curved centre sweep hand on the outermost track, the seconds track is further divided into fifths of a second. This dial arrangement is sometimes referred to as Doctors dial because it allows the seconds hand to be stopped using the slide on the outside of the inner case (located at the 4 o clock position) for the purpose of taking the patients pulse. The outer case has a deep red and dark brown mottled finish with silver pin work decoration on a gilt metal base. The inner gilt case is plain polished. The outer case measures 58mm in diameter (2.3inches). The total combined weight including movement is 145grams (approx 5 ozs). Condition The movement has been serviced and cleaned in November 2017, it is running strongly and keeps to good verge time, (as with most old verges accuracey is improved by consistent room temperature). The stop start function is in working order. The dial is in excellent condition without any chips or hairlines. The inner case has no dents or dings, the thin layer of gilt finish on the inner cover is starting to fade away with age in places. The outer case retains its natural gloss sheen and colours, some of the pique work decoration is missing and it has a couple of cracks to the outer translucent covering. Please enlarge and take time to view the pictures which will provide a fair indication of the overall cosmetic condition. A bit more info on the pocket watch and its maker. John Kentish Junior is noted by Baillie, to have been active between 1758-74. The partnership was based at Storey’s Gate, Westminster, London but was dissolved in 1772. In 1774 Kentish was recorded to be working at Southampton Street, London when he declared himself bankrupt while continuing to work as a watchmaker until 1798. Doing some research myself on the internet it mentions that there are only six pocket watches known to have been made by John Kentish Jnr. This particular watch has the added rarity of having the full makers name and address signed on both the movement and the dial, I have not yet seen another Kentish pocket watch with the street location included on both the dial and the movement, which may possibly make this the only one still in existence to include this particular information on the watch. It would be a rare find if it does turn out to be the only one with the Southampton st address, but regardless it’s still a rare example being one of just half a dozen pocket watches signed by the clock and watch maker John Kentish Jnr. My additional info above was compiled from info found at the following sources. Wiki John Kentish Jr. Please look out for my. And add me to your. The item “C1774 JOHN KENTISH, JR. LONDON. The case is a Wadsworth 14K white gold filled case with the very desirable bar over crown styling. It shows only light wear on the bow and adjoining frame.
