Pocket Watch Case

It is a seven (7) jewel key wind, key set movement. The movement serial number 4013, dates production to May 1857, using Waltham’s handwritten records (see picture). These 7 jewel movements rarely come up for sale because they were just a fraction of total production. It was fully serviced about a year ago and had a new mainspring installed at that time. It runs well and keeps good time. This piece starts with a quadruple hinged Boston Watch Co. Coin silver hunter case which is stamped B. 2490 and bears the Eagle Silver Hallmark. An uninitialed shield centers the front cover. The case is in good condition and appears to be original to the dial and movement. The front cover opens sharply when released and stops at 90 degrees as it should. The back cover opens to just past 90 degrees. There is a slight amount of play in the back covers as is typically expected with a case of this age. The front cover, cuvette and bezel hinges are all tight. The covers snap shut tight leaving no play or gaps. The bow has remained tight. The case shows normal, even pocket wear from use and polishing but there are not deep dents or scratches present. The watch measures 55mm (2 1/8″) wide X 79mm (3 1/16″) from the top of the bow to the base of the case X 19mm (3/4) thick. Overall, the case has aged nicely. The white porcelain unsunk dial is in excellent condition showing no hairlines or edge chips. The blued spade pointers and bright and crisp. The glass crystal is scratch free. The 18sz, 7 jewel, Model 1857, gilt, full plate key wind and key set movement is super bright and crisp. It is signed “Waltham – Dennison Howard & Davis”. The serial number of 4013 dates production of this piece back to May 1857 (see accompanying photo of Waltham’s hand written records above). The movement shows only minor service marks and has a very attractive luster. It has been serviced within the past year and had a new mainspring installed. It winds and sets fine and is running strongly and keeping excellent time. A key will be included with the watch. These DHD timepieces are among the earliest produced by Waltham. Start the balance wheel with the blow tool, and it runs for awhile, then quits. Seems to need cleaning. No cracks in the porcelain dial, but it is missing a glass crystal. Hard to believe this watch was made in 1896!!! The detailed engraving on the front and back covers of this Size 0 pocket watch are almost as sharp as they were when this watch was made. Obviously this watch was not worn often. The American Watch Case Company 14k solid gold case measures 34.6 mm wide not including the bow and crown. It weighs 22.1 pennyweight or 34.3 grams. There is a Oct. 7,’98 dedication on the inside dust cover lid. This Waltham watch is way too nice to be scrapped. The SIGNED dial is clean and has black Roman numeral hour markers and matching blued hands. The crystal is clean. The hinges are tight. The SIGNED movement is a 7 jewel model 1891 stem wind and stem set movement. S old as you see it pictured here and as described. I sell all my watches as-is and as found. I was particularly impressed with the ribbed edges of this case. This Elgin watch dates back to 1896 per the SIGNED movement’s serial # 6,399,341. This serial number dates this watch to 1896. This is a Model 4, class 6, grade 96. It is stem wound and lever set. It is currently running but I have seen it stop. The SIGNED dial has thin black Roman numeral hour markers and blued hands. Sunken seconds regiater at the 6 o’clock position. The front cover hing is over-sprung. The back cover and dust covers are good and tight. I have no service records for this antique Elgin watch. There are some scratches on the reverse side of the case which can be seen in the upper left of the picture of the hinge. Following is from an appraisal. Signed on the top plate for “Benjamin Chadwick Liverpool” serial number 11320. Half plate, (if the fourth wheel as well as the escape and the balance all have a separate cock, it is known as a half plate, regardless of how much of the top plate is left), key wound, fusee with chain, the cut compensated balance with gold temperature screws and platinum? Quarter screws, helical blue steel hairspring, free-sprung with overcoils, diamond endstone, jewelled to the third, endstone to the escape. The brass detent foot planted in the pillar plate and fitted with an overlength steady pin. Spring detent, the brass escape wheel and detent of Earnshaw type. Plain with fixed dome and barrel edge to the band, gold joints, pendant with front cover release button, front cover engraved with garter strap surrounding blank cartouche. Case assayed in Chester (three sheaves and sword), 1873 (“k”), maker Hugh Green, 20 Pownall Square, Liverpool, registered 5th June 1865 (“HG” incuse). Pendant assayed in Birmingham (anchor), 1873 (“Y”), probably by John Johnson (listed as “Pendant Maker”), at 8 Mount Street, Chapel Fields, Coventry, (“JJ” in oval cartouche). Different marks on pendants do not necessarily indicate replacements; pendant making was a separate specialism and this is a commonly found discrepancy. The blue steel hands in spade style with gold colored seconds hand, the latter probably a replacement. The detent spring showing signs of a soldered repair next to the locking stone.
