Antique HUGUENIN & CO Coin silver Hunter’s case pocket watch with key and chain. The case is in good shape, it opens as designed. The front and back both have an etched design. The edge of the case is ridged like a coin. Little sign of wear. A small dimple on the front cover (at about the six o’clock position). Inside the front cover :”Warranted Coin silver” and “20″. On the inside of the hinged back cover. On the outside of the Hinged cover over the mechanism: W. HUGUENIN & CO, GENEVE, Anchor Straight Line” “No. On the inside of the Hinged cover over the mechanism. 48120″ & “16″ & a chevron symbol with “Argent imprinted. On the rim of the silver part of the case around the mechanism: “Argent”. The porcelain face is not marked and shows no damage. The hands appear to match. The chain is gold colored metal, and is likely gold filled. The key is steel, with some surface rust. In 24 hours it gained about 4 minutes. We did no adjustments. We only wound it, and set it. Please review the photos for further information on the condition. We believe the watch may have belonged to the man in the following article. Walter Hermann Bucher (March 12, 1888 February 17, 1965) was a German-American geologist and paleontologist. He was born in Akron, Ohio to Swiss-German parents. In 1911 he was awarded a Ph. By the University of Heidelberg with a focus on geology and paleontology. And joined the University of Cincinnati as a lecturer. By 1924 he was a professor of geology at the institution. His early works were on paleontology, and he performed studies of stromatolettia, oolites, and ripple-shaped markings. Later he concentrated on the Earth’s crust diastrophism problem and proposed firstly (immediate and independent[clarification needed] with Mikhail Tetyaev) the pulsation hypothesis of the Earth developing. In 1935 he became president of the Ohio Academy of Sciences. In 1940 he joined the Columbia University, specializing in structural geology. It is thought that at this time he worked as a consultant on the Manhattan Project, hypothesizing how the detonation of the atomic bomb could affect the Earth’s crust. In the same year he joined the National Research Council, as a consultant as chairman of the Division of Geology and Geography. Here is a very clean solid 14k gold 12 Size American Waltham Hunter’s Case pocket watch that is 103 years old and is running. This watch has a very ornate crisp case that measures 45.1 mm wide not including the bow and crown. It weighs 61.6 grams or 39.6 pennyweight. Too nice to scrap and has ornate front and back covers. Good tight front, back, and dust cover hinges. The SIGNED dial is super clean and has black Arabic block hour markers and matching blued hands. Sunken seconds register with a perfect sized blue hand. Appears to be all original. The SIGNED movement is a 17 jewel stem wound and stem set USA made movement and is running. The movement’s serial # 21,102,924 dates this watch to 1917. This is a Model 1894 Grade 225. I have no service records for this 103 year old Waltham pocket watch. It is s old as you see it pictured here. I sell all my watches as-is and as found. It is a seven (7) jewel key wind, key set movement. The movement serial number 4013, dates production to May 1857, using Waltham’s handwritten records (see picture). These 7 jewel movements rarely come up for sale because they were just a fraction of total production. It was fully serviced about a year ago and had a new mainspring installed at that time. It runs well and keeps good time. This piece starts with a quadruple hinged Boston Watch Co. Coin silver hunter case which is stamped B. 2490 and bears the Eagle Silver Hallmark. An uninitialed shield centers the front cover. The case is in good condition and appears to be original to the dial and movement. The front cover opens sharply when released and stops at 90 degrees as it should. The back cover opens to just past 90 degrees. There is a slight amount of play in the back covers as is typically expected with a case of this age. The front cover, cuvette and bezel hinges are all tight. The covers snap shut tight leaving no play or gaps. The bow has remained tight. The case shows normal, even pocket wear from use and polishing but there are not deep dents or scratches present. The watch measures 55mm (2 1/8″) wide X 79mm (3 1/16″) from the top of the bow to the base of the case X 19mm (3/4) thick. Overall, the case has aged nicely. The white porcelain unsunk dial is in excellent condition showing no hairlines or edge chips. The blued spade pointers and bright and crisp. The glass crystal is scratch free. The 18sz, 7 jewel, Model 1857, gilt, full plate key wind and key set movement is super bright and crisp. It is signed “Waltham – Dennison Howard & Davis”. The serial number of 4013 dates production of this piece back to May 1857 (see accompanying photo of Waltham’s hand written records above). The movement shows only minor service marks and has a very attractive luster. It has been serviced within the past year and had a new mainspring installed. It winds and sets fine and is running strongly and keeping excellent time. A key will be included with the watch. These DHD timepieces are among the earliest produced by Waltham.
