Pocket Watch Case

This is an extremely nice old Civil War Era Wm. Ellery 18 size 4 hinged coin silver hunting case. The gilt movement is marked Wm. Ellery Boston, Mass with serial number 212831 ca. The case is marked Warranted Coin Silver with fancy tooling inside the front cover. The case has gold hinges and shows only minimal wear while the engraving is still very crisp. The movement shows normal patina with no signs of abuse. I don’t know how many jewels, but there are 4 large “window pane” jewels visible on the top plate. The watch is running and setting fine but I don’t know when it was last serviced, so no guarantee to accuracy or extended run time. The balance has a great motion with a slight “wiggle”, but the pivots are fine. I would recommend a good cleaning and truing the balance, if you want better accuracy. In all original condition. This watch is the Wm Ellery model 1857. This particular watch is in excellent condition and is running good and keeping good time. The coin silver case is marked 3 ounce and is in fantastic condition and is hand engraved with a bird and a farm scene no doubt from the same period. The American Watch Company signed porcelain dial is flawless. The glass crystal has no scratches and is also in excellent condition. This is a key wind, key set pocket watch. Case Material– Coin or Sterling silver -unmarked but has been tested. Case Color– Silver but very dark natural age patina / tarnish as pictured-has not been polished. Jewels– 15 large white Sapphire jewels. Unmarked but fully jeweled front and back plates except for the center wheel. Dial Condition– Ok original with some issues near the sub seconds area. Hands are old but somewhat different that each other. Case Condition– Nice original -unpolished. Special Features — rare to find in this nice of condition. Offset hinges , comes with an old winding key- Wind from the back and set from the front. Early solid balance movement. Other Information–Heavy watch -179 Grams total weight. 57.25mm across the case. This is a nice Civil War Waltham model 1857 made in February 1863. It is a keywind and keyset movement in a really nice silver Eagle Waltham case. The watch ticks and runs but will require a service to keep accurate time. The dial is perfect and beautiful. The case has a glass crystal which is likely original because they are almost impossible to find in glass at that size nowadays. The case springs open and closes but the hinge will require adjustment. I only have a universal key set so no key is provided, sorry.
