CIRCA 1785 SILVER REPOUSSE’ PAIR CASE POCKET WATCH BY JOSEPHSON OF LONDON. THE WATCH IS UNUSUAL, CASE MADE BY J. JOSEPH CARPENTER AND HAS THE RARE KING GEORGE DUTY MARK FOR THE YEAR 1785. KING GEORGE PLACED A DUTY OF 6d ON ENGLISH PRODUCED WATCHES INTENDING TO INCREASE THE SALES PRICE OF ENGLISH WATCHES AGAINST THE CHEAPER SWISS IMPORTS. AT THIS TIME HE ALSO REQUIRED THE WATCH SERIAL NUMBER TO ALSO BE STAMPED ON THE INSIDE CASE. THIS HALLMARK HAS KING GEORGE FACING TO THE LEFT IS VERY RARE, USED FOR ONLY ONE YEAR. IN 1786 THE HALLMARK CHANGED WITH KING GEORGE FACING RIGHT UNTIL THE UNPOPULAR ACT WAS REPEALED IN 1798. THE STERLING CASE MEASURES 51MM IN DIAMETER(OUTER CASE) AND FITS PERFECTLY IN THE ORIGINAL INNER CASE. THE BEZEL HAS A NICE HIGH DOMED BULLSEYE CRYSTAL. THE WATCH MADE BY JOSEPHSON, LONDON #19112 WAS MADE FOR THE DUTCH MARKET, JOHN JOSEPHSON, WAS A LONDON WATCHMAKER FROM THE MID 1750′S TO THE 1780′S. THIS WATCH FEATURES ARCADED DUTCH STYLE PORCELAIN DIAL AND THE VERGE FUSEE MOVEMENT WITH SQUARE PILLARS AND A BRIDGE COCK. THE ORIGINAL DIAL HAS SOME FADING AROUND 12 – 1 O’CLOCK. THE CROWN WHEEL VERGE FUSEE MOVEMENT HAS RECENTLY BEEN SERVICED AND RETAINS BRIGHT GOLD GILT FINISH. IT IS KEEPING REASONABLE TIME FOR A WATCH NEARLY 250 YEARS OLD, DON’T EXPECT IT TO RUN LIKE A MODERN WATCH.
