Beautiful Rare 1795 Custom named Dial “Thomas Carter” and matching with the movement “Thomas Carter, 1795 of Port Isaac” England, verge fusee Pocket Watch. Outstanding matching silver Pair Case, Silver hall marked (t) 1795 London assay, also with Rarer right facing Duty Mark. Beautiful white colored porcelain dial with nice clear Bold Letters perfectly designating each of the hours, and four sub quarter numbers. This dial has beautiful eye appeal with just a few very faint markings from years of use, otherwise super clean. The matching thick solid Gold hands are a perfect complement. Sharp near spotless high domed Bulls Eye Crystal is beautiful with just to mention a small air bubble in the glass in between “A” and the “R”, undistracting and was formed when they blew the glass. Only adding to the character. All case covers open, close and fit perfect together with nice and tight hinges. Key wind and key set pocket watch runs full length of chain. Balance has beautiful motion. The balance bridge is beautiful with what appears to be two snakes on the footing and ornate scroll work above, as does the left side of the movement. The movement is super clean with blue screws and is regulated by a silver disked regulator with a finger pointing for adjustment. The watch measures approx. 54mm excluding the bow. Pocket watch runs outstanding and keeps great fusee time, last checked about +/- 1 or 2 minutes within approx. 24 hour period hanging from a hook in the vertical position…….. But cannot guarantee accuracy upon sale. These watches are verge type. Meant to keep time, not perfect time 221 years ago. Also special care must be taken not to overwind these old museum pieces. Inside the case is a very crisp and clean old watch makers paper with T. Carter written on the back. Watch is listed in the Watch and Clock makers of the world book with multiple Thomas Carters. Watch comes with a sharp key for winding. Note all of my pocket watches have been personally serviced and restored to there best working order according to there age and condition. This is a super Rare and unique pocket watch. When I was restoring the watch I found underneath the balance bridge the No. 5 as a serial number. The movement has the watch makers name matching the Dial “Thomas Carter” and date “1795″. This leaves me to believe that this must be one of the early pocket watches made by Thomas Carter of Port Isaac and quite possibly one of his own to carry. Truly a very fascinating time piece for the collector and a Great pocket watch to add to any collection. This is an antique Howard N size keywind pocket watch. The movement is gilt, jeweled, and has EARLY serial number 4585. The watch runs strong, but has not been cleaned or serviced in years. So, I cannot guarantee it to be a reliable timekeeper. The dial is good, with a couple of faint small hairlines that hard difficult to see without a magnifier. The case is not the original Howard case. It is a keywind hunter case, coin silver, 18 size, with good case springs and hinges. The case is a 3 ounce size, and is in very good condition with normal signs of use. You can decide whether to carry it in this case, or find a correct case for it. A key is included. A rare find from a watch collector’s estate; an antique J. Benson (of London, England) demi hunter pocket watch, circa 1901. Case is well hallmarked with a 1901 date stamp (Queen Victoria died in January of 1901); a London, England stamp, a STERLING. SILVER stamp, and a “JWB” maker’s stamp. The watch movement has a wonderful gold colored finish; with gold jewel settings, it is stem wind and pin set, presumed 15 jewels. Stamped on the 3/4 plate is, BY WARRANT TO H. THE LATE QUEEN VICTORIA, J. Benson, 62 & 64 Ludgate Hill London. The watch ran for over 24 hours and is within 2 minute accuracy. The case is approximately 16 size with 3 hinged covers. Is inset with a 17.5mm beveled glass crystal and is inlaid with blue enamel for the minute chapter ring and Roman numerals. The case has some scratches and dings; the cuvette cover has scratches throughout, presumed a non professional removed a former. Inscription and did NOT do the final polish to take out the scratches. The white enameled dial has a black minute chapter ring, Roman numerals for the hours. Arabic at the 10-second positions in the subsidiary seconds. The dial and crystals are in very good condition. The blued steel spade hands are in very good condition. The diameter of the case is 51.7mm, with an. Overall length (including the bow) of 73.5mm and a thickness of 16.4mm. THE TOTAL GROSS WEIGHT OF THE WATCH IS 133.1 GRAMS. BENSON COMPANY (from the Internet). Benson Ltd was a highly regarded London watch/clockmakers and gold/silversmiths who traded between 1847 and 1973. The Benson family had been watchmakers since 1749. A company, trading as S. Benson, was founded in 1847 by James William Benson (born in 1826 in Reading) and his older brother Samuel Suckley Benson (born in 1822 in London). The partnership was dissolved on 27th January 1855 and James William continued the business under the name, J. James William Benson died on 7th October 1878, aged 52, and his sons James, Alfred and Arthur took over the running of the business. Throughout its history, J. Benson Ltd was official watchmaker to the Admiralty & the War Department and also held a number of royal warrants, being watchmakers to Queen Victoria, the Prince of Wales, the Tsar of Russia and several other royal families. In 1892 it became a limited company and moved to their new’steam’ factory at 38 Belle Sauvage Yard. The factory was bombed, destroying thousands of timepieces and from this point on the company no longer manufactured its own watches, but still continued as a retailer. For sale is a Jules Jergensen Copenhagen Pocket Watch. This is one absolutely stunning pocket watch. This watch has been previously owned, but is running great. We had this watch serviced just before listing the watch. The watch was cleaned and lubricated. All functions are working as intended. This watch is free of any aftermarket engravings. All marks on this watch are those which came from the factory. This watch features a full hunter case composed of 18kt yellow gold. The exterior of the case has the factory machine turned finish though it is slightly faded. The pattern is still clearly visible.
