A rare find from a watch collector’s estate; an antique J. Benson (of London, England) demi hunter pocket watch, circa 1901. Case is well hallmarked with a 1901 date stamp (Queen Victoria died in January of 1901); a London, England stamp, a STERLING. SILVER stamp, and a “JWB” maker’s stamp. The watch movement has a wonderful gold colored finish; with gold jewel settings, it is stem wind and pin set, presumed 15 jewels. Stamped on the 3/4 plate is, BY WARRANT TO H. THE LATE QUEEN VICTORIA, J. Benson, 62 & 64 Ludgate Hill London. The watch ran for over 24 hours and is within 2 minute accuracy. The case is approximately 16 size with 3 hinged covers. Is inset with a 17.5mm beveled glass crystal and is inlaid with blue enamel for the minute chapter ring and Roman numerals. The case has some scratches and dings; the cuvette cover has scratches throughout, presumed a non professional removed a former. Inscription and did NOT do the final polish to take out the scratches. The white enameled dial has a black minute chapter ring, Roman numerals for the hours. Arabic at the 10-second positions in the subsidiary seconds. The dial and crystals are in very good condition. The blued steel spade hands are in very good condition. The diameter of the case is 51.7mm, with an. Overall length (including the bow) of 73.5mm and a thickness of 16.4mm. THE TOTAL GROSS WEIGHT OF THE WATCH IS 133.1 GRAMS. BENSON COMPANY (from the Internet). Benson Ltd was a highly regarded London watch/clockmakers and gold/silversmiths who traded between 1847 and 1973. The Benson family had been watchmakers since 1749. A company, trading as S. Benson, was founded in 1847 by James William Benson (born in 1826 in Reading) and his older brother Samuel Suckley Benson (born in 1822 in London). The partnership was dissolved on 27th January 1855 and James William continued the business under the name, J. James William Benson died on 7th October 1878, aged 52, and his sons James, Alfred and Arthur took over the running of the business. Throughout its history, J. Benson Ltd was official watchmaker to the Admiralty & the War Department and also held a number of royal warrants, being watchmakers to Queen Victoria, the Prince of Wales, the Tsar of Russia and several other royal families. In 1892 it became a limited company and moved to their new’steam’ factory at 38 Belle Sauvage Yard. The factory was bombed, destroying thousands of timepieces and from this point on the company no longer manufactured its own watches, but still continued as a retailer.
