Gilt pair case watch measuring 51.5 mm in diameter by George Jepson of Melbourne. This is an interesting watch with nice bright gilt plates and fine quality engraved/pierced plates. Not much information that I have found on Mr. George Jepson only that he was in prison in 1811 in Nottingham. The 1811 prison record listed him as a watch/clock maker living in Nottingham originally from Melbourne. This watch was no doubt made before his move to Nottingham so I would guess 1790- early1800. The gilt brass pair cases with little remaining gilt so I polished and it looks great. The verge movement recently serviced and keeping reasonable time for a verge. The Arabic numeral porcelain dial is in excellent condition and became very popular during the end of the 18th century. The gold hands are old and watch has a clean bulls eye crystal. The spring catch activated with the button on the case back is missing the very end piece(latch). The bow is old correct style replacement but in silver not brass. Inside case back has watch paper by “Bunston” of Chard. Bunston was a mid 19th century watchmaker. The watch has just been cleaned and serviced and the movement is in perfect working condition. It runs to the end of the fusee chain very smoothly and keeps very good time. The repeater mechanism functions perfectly. The sound is loud and clear. The movement has a push pendant quarter repeating two hammers on a bell. Three arm steel balance. Beautiful engraved top plate and balance cock. The mint fire gilt movement is signed. Eardley Norton, London, and numbered : 15690. Is one of the most eminent English watch makes of England in the 18th century. He is well listed in all the referenced books. For a good example you can look at: G. Baillie, Watchmakers and Clockmakers of the World, Vol. 235: A maker of great repute of watches and complex clocks. He has watches and clocks on display in every major museum. The movement has its original mint dust cap, which is also signed. The cases: Silver inner ingraved case and silver outer case that is covered with beautiful dark brown leather with silver studs, and holes for the sound to come out clearly. It is a large and heavy pair case silver pocket watch. The silver inner mint case is 51 mm wide and the silver leather cased outer case is 63 mm. The watch weighs 179 grams. The extremely good original enamel dial with Roman numerals is signed. The enamel dial has 2 very slim hair lines that in my opinion can easily be bleached out. 21J Illinois Bunn Special in very fine condition throughout. The 16 size Bunn Special Model yellow gold filled has not been personalized or abused and shows only minor signs of use. The dial has a couple of very faint short hairlines (at 10 & 12) but these aren’t easily noticed and there are no chips or repairs and it’s still really quite nice. The crystal and hands are all in excellent condition. The 21 jewel sixty hour stem wind lever set Model 161 movement winds and sets smoothly and is in good running order, although it seems to gain about a minute and 1/2 or so per day, but this watch has been sitting unused for many years and a bit of attention should put it back to it’s original railroad approved accuracy. The serial number on the movement is 5,441,195 which dates it to 1938. Please don’t ask.
