In 1860, as Abraham Lincoln was elected President and the country found itself in the throes of the Civil War, the American Watch Company was faced with serious financial problems. By 1861, business had come to a standstill and bankruptcy seemed inevitable. The factory was kept in operation through these years by cutting expenses to the lowest possible level… A strategy that proved successful. According to the biography by Carl Sandburg, Abraham Lincoln owned and carried a Waltham Wm. The watch was an 11-jewel, 18 size, keywind in a silver hunting case, and was produced in January of 1863. The movement was last serviced on. This pocket watch displayed in Vintage shows and was used by me for 2 months always stored in a safe. Incased in a Minty Origional10K G. The case does show some tiny nicks on the case body from Hamiltons production line. The beautiful single sunk dial is near mint condition, showing a flea bite by the leaver on the edge only. The bezels screw on and off easily. It is not a factory display case, it was made using an original Majestic 5 year gold filled case and the back has been machined to accept a crystal. The case was in good condition with no wear on the main body and just a little wear on the stem. The case had some dings in the back where someone had tried to smooth out a dent, I decided to turn it into a display case and eliminate the dings. Rockford 16 size hunting cased pocket watch made in 1901. 20 year gold filled case with no worn through spots, not even on the stem. I looked up the mark and found it is from Parker Brothers and Rogers of Providence Rhode Island. The case has a beautiful design with a fishscale pattern on front and back. The sides have alternating coin edge design with some smooth sections and some patterned sections. The edges of the lids are concave, which is very unusual. The lid pops open with good spring action and goes to a little bit over 90 degrees. There are some minor dings and one crease style dent in the front cover. It was just serviced and keeps time to within a minute a day.
