Pocket Watch Case

It is a seven (7) jewel key wind, key set movement. The movement serial number 4013, dates production to May 1857, using Waltham’s handwritten records (see picture). These 7 jewel movements rarely come up for sale because they were just a fraction of total production. It was fully serviced about a year ago and had a new mainspring installed at that time. It runs well and keeps good time. This piece starts with a quadruple hinged Boston Watch Co. Coin silver hunter case which is stamped B. 2490 and bears the Eagle Silver Hallmark. An uninitialed shield centers the front cover. The case is in good condition and appears to be original to the dial and movement. The front cover opens sharply when released and stops at 90 degrees as it should. The back cover opens to just past 90 degrees. There is a slight amount of play in the back covers as is typically expected with a case of this age. The front cover, cuvette and bezel hinges are all tight. The covers snap shut tight leaving no play or gaps. The bow has remained tight. The case shows normal, even pocket wear from use and polishing but there are not deep dents or scratches present. The watch measures 55mm (2 1/8″) wide X 79mm (3 1/16″) from the top of the bow to the base of the case X 19mm (3/4) thick. Overall, the case has aged nicely. The white porcelain unsunk dial is in excellent condition showing no hairlines or edge chips. The blued spade pointers and bright and crisp. The glass crystal is scratch free. The 18sz, 7 jewel, Model 1857, gilt, full plate key wind and key set movement is super bright and crisp. It is signed “Waltham – Dennison Howard & Davis”. The serial number of 4013 dates production of this piece back to May 1857 (see accompanying photo of Waltham’s hand written records above). The movement shows only minor service marks and has a very attractive luster. It has been serviced within the past year and had a new mainspring installed. It winds and sets fine and is running strongly and keeping excellent time. A key will be included with the watch. These DHD timepieces are among the earliest produced by Waltham. For Sale: one 18 size American Waltham 15 jewel Dennison, Howard, & Davis grade pocket watch with it’s original sterling silver case. This watch is in excellent condition for it’s age; it was made in 1856, and was professionally serviced about a month ago, which included a new alloy mainspring and regulating for timekeeping. The movement serial number is 4,092; the twelfth picture is of the dial side of the movement. It is in a B. Case, which has a serial number of 4185; the case is in remarkably good condition for it’s age; the spring that holds the front cover closed is nice and strong, but the spring that opens the cover has weakened some with age. It still opens without any trouble. The eagle mark can be seen in the sixth picture. The dial is in overall great condition with no chips, but there are two hairline cracks one to the immediate right of the one o’clock marker, and the other in between the forty seven and forty eight minute marks. Both run to the center at the hand hole. A number 6 winding key is included with the watch, but the acrylic stand is not included. For your consideration is a Series VII 18S, 15J E. This watch was made between 1883 to 1899. Watch is in working condition. The Dial appears to have one hairline by the 10 without removing the bezel. The bezel is on tight enough that I will not force removal without appropriate tools. The Dial faces up very well. The Umbrella Hands are nicely blued. The crystal has scratches in a circle around the center and dirt particles on the inside which are kind of distracting. The Movement is a very nice gilt with the Letter N. The serial number is 206511. The watch is stem wind and stem set. The Hunter Case is 14K Gold and weighs 140 grams total weight. The front cover functions as it should. The Front and Dust Cover open to 90 degrees. The Back Cover opens to about 88 degrees. The Front Cover has large Old English Initials. For your consideration is a Series IX 18S, 15J E. This watch was made between 1890 to 1895. The total Production for this Series was only 5,000 by the E. Watch is in working condition. The Dial has a small hairline as seen in photo and some discoloration. Dial faces up very well. The Hands are nicely blued. The crystal does have small scratches like a wrist watch will get from wear. The Movement is gilt and marked with the N and Hound. The serial number is 402960. The watch is stem wind and stem set. The Hunter Case is 14K Gold and weighs 124 grams total weight. The front cover functions as it should. Front cover and Back Cover open right to 90 degrees. The Dust Cover flops. Overall case has very little to no wear. The back cover has three small indents where someone has probably pushed too hard when closing the back cover. When looking at photos you cannot notice much.
