Very nice little watch. Not my area of expertise but the watch might be gold fill? Crystal appears to be missing. Watch winds up well and will work for a moment or two but then stops. 1888 Waltham “Wm Ellery” Model 1873 11 jewel movement in solid 18K gold Hunting case. Starting with the case, beautiful engraving on the front and back. No dents or dings. The hallmark is stamped on the inside on the back of the case (see pictures above). All hinges and clasp work as they should. The watch is a stem wind and lever set. The lever will swing out to adjust the time. The single sunk enamel dial is near mint condition with no hairlines or chips, perfect glass crystal. Beautiful blue steel hands, bold black roman numerals. The movement has been fully serviced by Our Certified Master Watchmaker and keeps great time! Brief History: American Waltham Watch Company Including Serial Numbers and Production Dates. 1851 – 1957 Waltham, Massachusetts. The American Waltham Watch Company had its beginnings in 1850 in Roxbury, Massachusetts. The company was founded by David Davis, Aaron Dennison, and Mr. Their vision was to form a watch company that could produce high-quality watches at a lower cost using interchangeable parts. With financial backing from Samuel Curtis, the first watches were made in 1850, but problems were encountered. They were exploring new ideas in watch manufacturing, such as using jewels, making dials, and producing plates with a high-level of finish which required extensive tooling and resulted in great financial burden on the company. They also found that even though they were using interchangeable parts, each watch was still unique and had its own set of errors to be corrected. It took months to adjust the watches to the point where they were any better than other widely available timepieces. In 1851, the factory building was completed and the company began doing business under the name American Horology Company. The first watches produced went to officials of the company, and it was not until 1853 that the first watches were offered for sale to the public. The name was changed to “Boston Watch Company” in September 1853, and the factory in Waltham, Massachusetts was built in October 1854. The movements produced here (serial numbers 1001 – 5000) were signed “Dennison, Howard, & Davis, ” C. It was reorganized as Appleton, Tracy & Co. And watches 5001 – 14,000 were produced. The first movements carried the Appleton, Tracy & Co. In January, 1859 the Waltham Improvement Co. And the Appleton, Tracy & Co. Merged to form the American Watch Company. In 1860, as Abraham Lincoln was elected President and the country found itself in the throes of the Civil War, the American Watch Company was faced with serious financial problems. By 1861, business had come to a standstill and bankruptcy seemed inevitable. The factory was kept in operation through these years by cutting expenses to the lowest possible level… A strategy that proved successful. According to the biography by Carl Sandburg, Abraham Lincoln owned and carried a Waltham Wm. The watch was an 11-jewel, 18 size, keywind in a silver hunting case, and was produced in January of 1863. American Horology owes much to the brilliant visionaries of the Waltham Watch Company. This is a stunning piece that has been in the family for quite some time. This is an Open Face American Waltham pocket watch, in a Crescent Watch Company nickel based watch case. This pocket watch has been in the family for generations, and (quite incredibly) in all its time has maintained perfect function. The pocket watch is large, and heavy – Open Face in style with a hanging loop. The “crystal” covering on this pocket watch is a very old thick plastic, red orange in color. I’ve never seen a Waltham Open Face as old as such with a red/orange covering. I have always found the contrast between the nickel case, deep gold hued brass winding crown, and red/orange “crystal” to be quite breathtaking. The dial color on this American Waltham Pocket watch is a high white – though (of course) it appears red orange through the thick age old plastic crystal. The dial is roman numeral, with spaced minute markers (and Arabic numerals every 5 minutes). There is a second hand dial, with indicators marks for every passing second and Arabic numerals (10-60 seconds). Just under the Roman Numeral 12, there is “Waltham” brand insignia. The hands, Roman numerals, Arabic numerals, and all indicators on the dial are black in color – up against the white dial (very legible). The bezel at the front is screw fastened. Once the front bezel is unscrewed and removed, pulling the winding crown up will free the internal timekeeping mechanism. There is a hinge, and the internal timekeeping mechanism can be flipped up – revealing the interior of the back of the Crescent case. While this pocket watch is stunning at the exterior, the true beauty of this timepiece comes at the interior. The movement is very ornate, elegantly etched in meticulously inlaid pattern and design. Thorned vines of dark black sprawl across the movement in finite detail. “American Waltham Watch Co” is engraved in a whimsical font that becomes one with the inlaid vines. The balance wheel, screws, micrometer are a high polish gold tone. The movement is marked “17 Jewels, ” as well as 16910930. ” The inside back of the case (visible when the movement is flipped up and pictured above) is stamped “Trade Mark with crescent and star – the Crescent Watch Company logo. The number 4681 is imprinted right below the Crescent logo. There are some sequences of numbers and letters hand etched in the interior of the case: seen above in the listing photos. They are: F3986, F6996, F9354, along with three other indecipherable sequences. 5.5 cm Wide by 5.5 cm Height (excluding winding crown). With winding crown about 7.7 cm in height. Overall, this is truly a one of a kind antique. A family heirloom that we hope to pass on to a new family… A family that can give it all of the love, admiration, and care we have through all the years. I will get back to you promptly.
