Offered here is a beautiful and substantial Waltham 18-size, key wound Man’s silver hunting case pocket watch, which dates back to 1885. It features a well built, 5 ounce Sterling silver case, housing a 13 jewel R. Robbins movement and is fronted by a beautiful white porcelain dial. It has been completely serviced withing the past year and had a new white alloy mainspring installed. It is running strongly and keeping excellent time. The watch will come with a winding/setting key supplied with the watch. I will also gladly consider any offers you may with to make. This piece starts with a quadruple hinged case which is stamped inside the front cover A. Sterling – 194044. The inner dust cover also bears the same serial number along with a “5″ denoting the weight of the case. The inner back cover continues to display the matching serial number and carries the original watch paper issued by Waltham guaranteeing its Sterling Silver content. The back of the watch paper has a hand written inscription that reads Feb 16 – 85 Maria and a last name that is ineligible. The front cover is ornately decorated with leaf and vine patterns along with an unsigned initial shield in the center. The back cover is similarly engraved. The front cover springs open to 90 degrees when released. The back cover opens to just past 90 degrees. The front and back cover hinges are tight with no play. The back cover hinge doesn’t have any noticeable play but has sustained just enough wear that it no long supports the heavy cover by itself. The covers all close tight and the the bow has remained tight. The case shows only light, even pocket wear and has aged gracefully. This is a bright, clean case, in very good overall condition with all of the engraving remaining strong and plainly visible. The white single sunk porcelain dial is marked with black roman hour chapters and minute marks. The dial looks to be perfect. No hairlines, scratches or edge chips. The blued steel hands look in nice condition and have mirrored edges. A hinged bezel houses the glass crystal and opens to allow the time to be set from the dial side. The crystal is scratch free. The 18sz, 13 jewel, Model 1883, gilt, full plate key wind and key set movement is in good condition showing only minor service marks. It is signed R. Robbins – Waltham, Mass. The serial number 2828228 dates this piece back to around 1885. The watch has been serviced within the past year. It winds and sets smooth and is running strongly and keeping excellent time. A key will be included with the watch. This is a very well preserved timepiece that is quality made, heavy and substantial when held in hand. This wonderful, and wonderfully working, antique Waltham American watch is in great condition; it is an 11 jewel movement (according to the research Ive done). The movement is size 18s; the watch in case measures 2 & 3/8 in diameter. The serial number on the movement is: 724024. The heavy chain is tested as sterling silver and measures 12.5 long. The watch is a key wind and key set. The key, which may be the antique original, is affixed to the chain by several non silver links. The watch is in quite good condition.
