16 size 21 jewel hunting case lever-set Bunn Special pocket watch. An excellent example of this rare watch, the total production of this particular hunting case variant is believed to be only approximately 650 made and across all variants hunting case 16 size Bunn Specials are rare and make up less than 1% of total 16 size Bunn Special production. Watch is fronted by its correct double-sunk enamel dial, and watch is housed in a “Permanent” quality gold-filled Fahys hunting case that appears likely its original and that features attractive engraving detail including a home scene to its rear. Front shield of case is engraved with initials, and cuvette of case is inscribed with a Christmas, 1922 presentation engraving. Movement has rayed pattern nickel damaskeen. Serial number is 4216155. Running and a beautiful movement with excellent color and luster. Dial faces up well though with a few light hairlines. Rear of dial has been inspected and does have correct dial feet positions for this Model 8 movement. Case is attractive showing typical light wear to its engraving detail and has some scattered mild dings. Case cuvette has a small bit of play at its hinge and will fall closed freely with gravity. This is an antique (circa 1896) Hampden Special Railway 17J pocket watch with 18s gold filled Hunter case. Its condition is consistent with its age. The hunter case is operational; it opens and shuts as it should. The outer back lid is marked “Dueber Canton O USA trade mark 3347397″. The inner back lid is marked “Guaranteed to be made of 10 Karat Gold over hard metal and to wear for 20 years”. It has the same trade mark number as the outer lid. This piece has a Roman Numeral dial. All three hands are intact, however the hour hand is slightly bent. Dial has some minor signs of wear, mainly dirt/grease accumulation. McCarthy emigrated from Ireland to Iowa at age seventeen, he could not have imagined the impact he would have on the industry. Starting out as a water boy, he quickly advanced to stone-cutter, to foreman, then became the superintendent. In 1897, he founded the McCarthy Stone Company in Davenport, IA and incorporated as McCarthy Improvement Company on Feb. Five generations later, his family-run company is still committed to industry advancement. Born in Ireland on 1857 to Daniel McCarthy and Bridget Marne. Patrick McCarthy married Rose Ann Donahue and had 1 child. He passed away on 2 May 1928 in Winona, Winona, Minnesota. McCarthy House in Davenport, Iowa is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. This watch is over 100 years old and not sure when the last service was done and may still need to be professionally cleaned/serviced in order to keep time accurately.
