Diameter 56 mm, weight 153g, movement no. 43 731, case no. 1905 to company Joseph Verhagen & co Colone (a Watch dealer founded 1826, Maker to the royal Courts off Preußen and England 1887). Smooth 18k gold case in the form ” Louis XV “. The case front has monogram BE, the cuvette with Inscription: To my Brother Ernst, In friendly memory 1905. The watch was a gift from Ernst Bertuch of Cologne to his brother Otto, both members of the Deutsche Kolonialgesellschaft, Cologne Department, which also listed the Bertuch & Co. Extra Gold rimed Glass dome over the movement, both the case and the movement are in almost mint condition, one scratch on the inside of the back lid. Three-piece enamel dial, the dial is signed A. Lange & Söhne Glashütte B/ Dresden with countersunk small second, black Arabic Empire numbers, outer minute wreck. Original Louis XV gold hands. The dial and hands are very well preserved and undamaged. Excellent 3/4 plate movement, grained, gilded and signed. Gold screw compensation balance. Hand engraved balance cock. Goose neck fine Adjustment. Gold anchor and gold anchor wheel. Chatonized Ruby endstone on the balance. Lange & Söhne No 43 731 Glashütte bei Dresden. The as good as new movement runs perfectly. Later cased in a lovely gold-filled glass back repeater case with Breguet style silver dial. A wonderful watch for the collection! Quarter Repeater The quarter repeater strikes the number of hours, and then the number of quarter hours since the last hour. The mechanism uses 2 chimes of different tones. The low tone usually signals the hours, and the high tone the quarter hours. As an example, if the time is 2:45, the quarter repeater sounds 2 low tones and after a short pause 3 high ones: “dong, dong, ding, ding, ding”. Alternatively, some use a pair of tones to distinguish the quarter hours: “dong, dong, ding-dong, ding-dong, ding-dong”. Key-wind/Key-set Movements The very first pocket watches up until the third quarter of the 19th century had key-wind and key-set movements. A watch key was necessary to wind the watch and to set the time. This was usually done by opening the case back and putting the key over the winding-arbor (which was set over the watch’s winding-wheel, to wind the mainspring) or by putting the key onto the setting-arbor, which was connected with the minute-wheel and turned the hands. Some watches of this period had the setting-arbor at the front of the watch, so that removing the crystal and bezel was necessary to set the time. This is a unique model and an extremely clean excellent plus Hamilton 992B in a model A display case. There is very minimal wear on the bow and the button high points which are the first places to show wear. The double sunk porcelain dial is also perfect as are both beveled glass crystals. The deep blue black hands are also excellent. The movement is also in excellent condition with a serial # C344757 ca. The watch is running great with a flat full motion. It appears to be keeping good time, but it has been in my personal collection for a few years and I don’t know when it was last serviced. This needs to go back into someone’s collection!!
