Silver pocket watch, pair cases, sun & moon wandering hour dial, London, c1690. Silver pair cases, 53 mm. A late 17th century London verge, with a beautiful wandering hour, sun & moon dial , in silver pair cases. MOVEMENT : Gilt verge movement, with finely pierced balance cock and plate, four wonderful wide gate type pillars pierced with trailing foliage, and silver regulator disk. The balance cock table is beautifully engraved with two birds. Signed John Ewer fecit. In very good condition, and running. DIAL : A beautiful silver champleve wandering hour or retrograde dial, with central revolving disk, marking the day time hour with the sun, and the night time with the moon. Signed as the movement. There are a few very light scratches to the blue background of the disk, but generally all in fine condition. Excellent gilt minute hand, of the period, and probably original. INNER CASE : Silver, with rubbed makers mark. The hinge is fine and the bezel closes correctly. The high dome crystal is fine. The stem and bezel are slightly later replacements (mid 18th century). OUTER CASE : Fine silver outer, with no makers marks. Nice large square hinge. The hinge and catch are fine (though the button is worn) and the bezel closes correctly. John Ewer is listed as making in London in and around 1690. A maker of this name was also apprenticed to Luke Bird in 1687. This is a classic Gentleman’s Rose Gold filled Full Hunter pocket watch with a superb ALD “Dennison” 20 year Moon case made from plates of solid 10ct Rose Gold with metal strengthening core, a true Gold filled Dennison case. The watch has come from a great old estate and has a good original estate find feel, it winds very well and hand sets as it should and works with a very strong steady action, it has not been tested but its working very well at present, the case is also opening and shutting as it wants to be and its never been engraved, its also the original case to the watch and its all genuine, even has its tatty old shammy leather pocket which is possibly why its in such fine original condition still now. The case is a Dennison MOON 20 year guaranteed (from date of manufacture) each part is made from 2 plates of 10ct gold with a plate of composition between them, vastly superior to electroplating which only deposits a very thin layer of gold. Good condition case, very clean and bright throughout, all hinges are good, all covers open and close well. Front cover pops open with a depression of the crown, as it should. Front and rear covers open to 90 degrees. Fantastic condition case, no marks or scratches worth mentioning. The dial is bright and clean, no hairline cracks or chips, signed “Waltham”. Arabic numbers, gold hands. The movement is a Waltham model 1899 dating to 1907, damascened, gold adjuster star, gold center wheel, running well and keeps good time. Good acrylic crystal in great condition. Great for wedding, graduation, retirement, Christmas, Fathers day or birthday present. Recently Fully Serviced, including modern alloy “unbreakable” mainspring. Presented in a fitted, red velvet pocket watch box with brass trim. Servicing is defined as the piece being disassembled, cleaned, inspected and adjusted if necessary. It is then re-assembled and correctly oiled, timed for accuracy and adjusted if required. The mainspring will be replaced with a modern alloy type and the piece will be bench-tested for at least one day. I restore all of my watches to a fully working condition. It is my aim to provide a watch that is not only running but working to a usable state. My watches can be worn and used for their intended purpose on a daily basis. 1917 WALTHAM USA 15 JEWEL Grade 620. 10CT GOLD FILLED DENNISON MOON CASE. Gentleman’s original American Waltham, U. 15 jewel pocket watch, with beautiful ivory porcelain dial and a highly polished, 10 carat rose gold filled (known in the UK as rolled gold) original Dennison “Moon” case. The case serial number is 592470 20 S. This would indicate it was made in 1920 (The S is the goldsmith’s initial). The movement serial number is 21285857 which dates to 1917. The watch is in good working order and keeps good time. The case is in very nice condition with no dents but a couple of small grazes at around the 4 position as can be seen in the photos. The porcelain face is in lovely clean and bright condition with just one hairline mark from the 2 position down to 5 on the second hand dial. Comes in a probably original soft leather pouch. Total weight is 102 grams. Measures: 5cm diameter, x 6.9cm from top of bow to base of hinges x 1.5cm thick. A very nice fully working antique pocket watch.
