A very interesting and most important MINT WATCH WITH SHAGREEN OUTER CASE large silver case REPEATER WATCH RINGS THE HOURS AND THE QUARTER HOURS ON A BELL. A verge, fusee movement. Interesting pillars, broad balance, set with a ruby end stone. PLEASE DO TAKE TIME TO READ THE FULL LISTING AND DO ENLARGE THE PHOTOGRAPHS TO GET A BETTER LOOK. The size of the mint silver and shagreen case is 62 m. M like oignon size. The case is covered with shagreen on the back of the case, and as you can see it is in mint condition with silver pins and round the holes to let out the sound of the repeater. The colour is a very good green, it will come with a good watchmakers paper. The silver case with the watch is also in mint condition, size 55 m. The weight of the watch 177 grams. All the hinges and clips work well on the cases. REPEATER to activate the repeater you push down the stem and it will ring on a bell with a good clear sound the hours and the quarter hours. The enamel dial is in mint condition. Very fine original gold hands. The glass is very high cleaan and clear. The fire gilt movement look just like the day it left the work shop. The watch runs well. Time keeping C + or – 1 minuets per hour. With a very interesting fine very well decorated and engraved broad balance cock, set with a ruby end stone. Unusual pillars, a silver Tompion regulator. Just great to have such an amazing and interesting watch that is as good as this one, and it just has every thing one could want on a fine verge watch, very hard to find a watch in this condition with all that it has going for it. WHAT AN ABSOLUTELY SUPERB TOP QUALITY WATCH! The 3 piece double hinged case to this absolutely beautiful watch is solid 18k gold. The dustcover IS also solid 18k gold and shows just light wear inside of the case is marked for 18k. It has a fantastic, stunning rare and extemely beautiful flowers and insect (a butterfly) hand multi colored enameled pattern to the case back. The enamel is in beautiful condition with just one slight bit of loss that is noticeable and a few light marks on the surface to the case back. The bezel is also beautifully enameled in red which looks amazing! The case side has a gorgeous engraved finish which shows NO dings to my eye. All covers push to and snap in well. I have gently polished the case, and it is shining wonderfully, as only real SOLID hi quality GOLD can. THE WATCH MEASURES 3.1CMS (31mm) across excluding the crown and chain ring. Both of the solid gold case hinges are excellent. This lovely collectible watch has a STUNNINGLY BEAUTIFUL AND EXTREMELY RARE original beautiful gold Pallione enameled dial. This dial is absolutely exquisite and of museum quality. The outside of the dial is adorned with a leaf engraved surround which looks stunning. It is un signed and is showing NO damage that I can see. It has beautiful black painted Roman numerals which are in excellent condition (see pics). The crystal seems to be glass is flush fitting, and also seems to be old. As such it is showing light wear but is in very good condition. The beautiful antique Louis XV style golden steel watch hands are in excellent original condition. This is a lovely condition nice quality unsigned cylinder movment which was typical of the movements at this time. It is Swiss made and is crown wound and pin set. It has minty steel screws. The watch runs well, and starts to tick after a couple of turns of the key. As usual this stunning watch would benefit from a service by a watchmaker for optimum performance and timekeeping. The watch is keeping good time to within a few mins per day as tested over a 12 hour period. It winds smoothly, and sets as it should. The crown is marked for solid 18k gold and the engraved chain ring looks to be plated. Please remember that vintage watches have survived for many decades by being treated well. Vintage watches are not for wearing while doing yard work, working out, or swimming. Vintage watches cannot keep time like their quartz cousins and will need altering on average between +-2 to +-5 mins per day. They are a little more destructible than modern watches. Vintage watches also require periodic service and cleaning. Every couple of years, they would like their 20,000 mile checkup, oil change, and general service. By taking care of your vintage watch, you will have years of great service, and a quality heirloom to pass to another generation. There is NO exception. Provenance;the watch comes from the most important chinese collection of the bulgarian diplomat Mr. Ferdinandov, who was the Bulgarian ambasador in Beijing during 1960′s. He brought over 1000 Chinese watches and clocks. His collection is considered for the biggest one in the whole Eastern Europe! Clocks and watches were never devices owned by the everyday citizen of China. The Chinese had been using a public time keeping system that was based on a combination of sun dials, water clocks, and astronomical observations. While the EQUINOCTIAL SYSTEM divides a 24 hour day into 12 equal periods, with each having four quarters (thus each quarter corresponds to an half-hour in western time keeping system), this system was only used by astronomers and astrologers. Because China was an agricultural based society, the PRACTICAL Chinese hours was the TEMPORAL SYSTEM, which were based on sunrise and sunset. Both the day and the night were divided into six equal periods. This obviously made the periods unequal because of seasonal changes: As winter approaches, the “day periods” became shorter; while during the summer, they become longer. To make things even more complicated, in practical use the night was actual divided into five “special” night periods, instead of the theoretical six; and each night period was in turn divided into five “points” equally. The first Chinese watches were originally constructed by the Mandarin Jesuit missionaries for the Chinese emperors since the late Ming dynasty (late 16th century to 1644). The emperors considered the watches as both astrological toys and jewelry. In fact, horological and astronomical instruments were the items that caught the emperors’ eyes and allowed the missionaries to obtain their feet in the Chinese doo. By the Manuchu (Ch’ing) dynasty (1644 – 1911), watches imported from Switzerland had become the Emperors’ favorite toys. The watches came in different shapes and types (such as a gun form watch, a musical watch, or a singing bird box with a watch), and no expense was spared in terms of jewelry ornamentations. Today you could still see part of his collection in the National Museum in Beijing. While K’ang-hsi had commissioned watches from his missionaries and Swiss horologers, Ch’ien-lung was more nationalistic by ordering Cantonese artisans to construct clocks in the “western fashion”. 1769, who entered the court while following the ambassador of Holland, and built a pendulum clock inside the Old Imperial Summer Palace Yuen-Ming-Yue. The enamel painting was frequently a depiction of flowers. The fact that the automaton companies were the leading horological importers of China showed that the Chinese continued to consider watches as mechanical toys. The Chinese were still using the temporal time system in everyday life. Even though some clever watchmakers did create watches that had an adjustable chapter to accommodate the changing time periods, the requirement of having a horologer to adjust the chapter daily rendered the adjustable watch impractical. The normal, “non-adjustable” version, continued to be only used by astrologers. Hence it was no suprise for the automaton companies that their wealthy Mandarin customers were mainly interested in Jewelry watches, or Repeaters. Save for the emperors and his court mathematicians, scientists and astronomers, no one seemed to be interested in purchasing a chronometer, a chronograph, or a calendar watch because no one would use a watch for actual timekeeping.
