Antique Seth Thomas Coin Silver Hunting Case Pocket Watch. This Seth Thomas is 18 size (case diameter is 55mm). The case is Blauer and marked coin as shown. The case has a moderate amount of wear but still shows some engraving. Many silver cases from this era are complete smooth because the engraving is entirely worn away. This is a 3 ounce case. The front lid spring is weak but opens to 90 degrees with a little help and latches properly. The movement is two tone finish with either 11 or 15 jewels. Dial is original and excellent. This watch runs and keeps reasonable time, but I do not know the history of this watch, so it may need to be serviced. Sorry, this is NOT a “Make Offer” listing. Thomas Mudge was one of the greatest watchmakers of all time. If you are not familiar with him it’s likely due to the rarity of his pocket watches, which were made in the 18th century. This London fusee watch was made in 1771, prior to the founding of America. This watch is 246 years old, and still running! The 18K Gold pair case is hallmarked with a crowned lion, and was professionally tested and confirmed to be 18K Solid Gold – Guaranteed. The outer case diameter is approximately 52.5mm, and the inner case is approximately 46mm. Both cases are heavy and quite thick. The total weight of the entire watch is 149.9 grams. The ornate key, which may be gold, would add 2 grams. The gold cases have multiple dings and scratches, and the bulls eye crystal has lots of scratches. It’s not too difficult to find a new crystal for this watch. Both the cases and crystal are very likely original to the watch. The cases open and close fine, and the heavy hinges are in great condition. The end stone is diamond. The dial is quite nice, and has a few tight hairlines. The hands function, but they have some damage. The watch is running well, and I would recommend having it cleaned / serviced at some point. Below are some technological facts about Thomas Mudge. George III Silver Pair Cased Pocket Verge Watch By Thomas Taylor With Albert Chain A very handsome and heavy silver pair-cased pocket watch with a silver Albert chain. The watch has a finely pierced watch cock and engraved back plate. It has a verge movement by Thomas Taylor of London. The dial is white with black numerals and golden hands. There are ten service slips stored in the rear of the outer case dating from the late 1800s. The watch is fully hallmarked on the inner case for Birmingham 1808 and with a makers mark of WR. The outer case has the same hallmarks. It comes with a silver Albert chain with the watch key and a George III coin attached. The silver chain is marked but not dated and is probably later than the watch. Dimensions The outer case has a diameter of 2 ¼ inches (5.7cm) and a depth of ¾ of an inch (2cm). The diameter of the watch is 2 inches (5cm). The chain measures 16 inches (41cm). The total weight of the chain and watch are 197g. Condition The watch is in very good condition for its age. Both the inner and outer case are slightly worn as to be expected but are free from dents. The dial has some hairline cracks and a small chip. The crystal is quite worn but free from chips and cracks. The watch runs smoothly when placed on its back or front but stops when stood upright so it will need a service.
