18th century example of a unique timepiece. Old world craftsmanship abounds in this classic tortoise shell design case along with the ornate verge fusee movement. It has not been tested for functionality and is assumed not to be in running condition, as it did not come with a key and we could not get any standard key to fit correctly. The watch is as pictured with hallmarked silver inner case and a bubble like crystal that has minimal scratches due to age and use. The hinges operate as they should making the inner workings accessible. The case back is decorated as shown and has hairline cracks in whatever medium was used to achieve the tortoise shell finish. The case is accented with rivets around the circumference as well as a push button release for the bezel. The dial has a chip at the 11 which has been touched up at some point in time. Inside the case behind the felt was found a folded letter believed to be in German, it was not removed to avoid potential damage. The movement has inscribed LM Spath Regentsburg.

There are multiple high definition super-sized pictures at the bottom of this page. A very good looking well made and decorative pocket watch, it is a Goliath as mentioned which is about 30% larger than a standard pocket watch. The case is in lovely antique condition, its easel backed so you can use this table mounted, I think the idea was protection and to sit on a bedside table or desk so you dont have to whip out your watch every time you need to check the clock. The watch has a white porcelain hand painted dial with blue hands, its signed Asprey Bond Street London, Swiss made, it has the normal minute and hour hands and then under a seconds subsidiary dial. The case is silver plated I think as I cant see any hallmarks, it does have lots of engraving including the word Argentan, Swiss and serial numbers. The back opens as one back plate, the original paper label is there which reads J Mortimer FBHI practical watchmaker jeweller 18 Kirkgate Ripon, you then open the second back plate which is also engraved with serial numbers and the word Argentan. The watch movement is protected by a glass plate which of course makes this an exhibition case. The watch operates perfectly and has a lovely sound. Date letter Q for 1915. The ships anchor for Birmingham. Sideways facing Lion for 925/1000 grade sterling silver. Height:- 9.2cm. Width:- 6.5cm. Depth:- 1.8cm. Width:- 10.2cm.
