Gentleman’s original Antique Waltham U. A, 7 jewel’Traveler’ pocket watch with beautiful ivory porcelain dial and a highly polished, 9 carat (tested) rose gold filled (has a lovely soft pink hue to it and is what is known in the UK as rolled gold) original Dennison half hunter case (with Fire Brigade inscription) which has the rarer dark blue Roman numerals to front cover. Looks to have been much loved and very well cared for and its condition certainly reflects this. Full working order and is an excellent timekeeper (within +2/-2 minute per 24 hours) with plenty of room on the regulator (which is sat correctly in the central position) for any further fine tuning. Fully checked and serviced by my highly experienced watchmaker and is guaranteed to be 100% authentic – a timepiece to grace any collection! Impressive and distinctive, high gloss, pale ivory (almost white) porcelain dial in mint condition – absolutely no hairlines, marks or nibbles. Signed clearly in black very fancy script; Waltham. Bold black Roman numerals with black minute markers, bolder, black five minute markers and bold triangular shaped 15 minute markers to chapter ring. Recessed sub dial with black Arabic numbers and black seconds chapters. Original, finely cut, bright blued steel double spade and whip hands (so allowing for easy time check through the front cover) and original blued steel, arrow tip seconds hand all in straight order. Original hunter glass (not acrylic) in clear and bright condition with no scratches or marks. Original slightly domed outer crystal in amazingly clear and bright order. The highly polished (5cm diameter /7cm from top of bow to base), 9 carat (tested) rose gold filled, original Dennison case is heavy (has a pleasing solid feel in the hand and total watch weight is a heavy 107.5 grams), robust and in superb condition – absolutely no wear (again looks to have been very well cared for plus please excuse the reflections in the pictures – was very difficult to photograph) one very tiny indentation to back cover which as so small is only visible if caught in the right light (so superficial not showing up in the photographs but mentioning for accuracy) and just overall extremely light and fine little micro surface scratches showing under eyeglass (usually caused by carrying the watch in a pocket with loose coins and other heavy objects jangling around) commensurate with age and use in her 115 years service. All covers (both inside and out) still retain their original, high gloss, mirror finish. The front cover carries the rarer dark blue Roman numerals (they are more commonly black) and the enamel work is in superb condition with no chips or fading to either the numbers or the inner and outer chapter rings. Numbered to the inside (very slightly rubbed); 930180. The back cover and dust cover both open to exactly 90 degrees, closing tightly and all three large hinges are true and firm with absolutely no play. The inside of the back cover is clearly stamped; STAR (the Dennison’Star’ cases where always 9ct gold filled), DENNISON WATCH CASE Co LTD Aaron Lufkin Dennison – one of the founding Fathers of the American Waltham Watch Company who moved from the U. A to England to establish the Dennison case factory, they made cases for all the leading watch manufacturers of the era including Rolex and Omega and is again numbered; 930180. This number is correctly, partially repeated to the back case cuvette;0180. The dust cover carries a wonderful inscription. The inside of the dust cover is clearly stamped; ENGLISH MAKE THIS CASE GUARANTEED TO WEAR 10 YEARS (again the’10 year’ Dennison cases where always 9ct gold filled) and is numbered; 930180 28 O – the O is the first letter of the surname of the Goldsmith at the Dennison factory who pinned the case joints, unfortunately on this occasion I have been unable to identify him. Interestingly I can find no old service marks to the inside of either of the covers which again leads me to think this watch has had very little use. The Waltham stem wound and set, 7 ruby jewelled, 3/4 fire gilt plate’Traveler’, lever movement (Size; 16, Model; 1899, Grade; Traveler) is in superb order (tiny bit of age patina showing under eyeglass only to the mainspring and ratchet barrel covers as to be expected) and has just been checked and serviced. Has a compensated bi-metal balance wheel (did not want to stop for the camera showing the balance spring is in perfect beat) with brass balance screws and two brass meantime screws (for precision timing), original bright blued steel overcoil balance spring which is true and’in the round’ and’breathing’ correctly, bright blued steel movement screws, ruby end stone in a screwed in chaton setting, ruby pallet jewels, beautifully and heavily engraved balance cock, micro whip regulator (which as mentioned earlier is sat correctly in the central position), attractive’swirl’ engine turning to the mainspring and ratchet barrel covers and original matching, highly polished steel case screws. Stamped clearly on the top plate in arched fancy script; American Waltham, U. TRAVELER and is numbered; 13290343 – dating her to 1904. This number is correctly, partially repeated to the bottom plate (under the dial); 290343. Balance action is excellent in all positions (could not be any better) and is keeping good time with a sure, strong positive action. Winds extremely smoothly and fully do not be afraid to fully wind, over-winding is the greatest horological myth! Hand set operates smoothly and correctly – the pull up/push down action is very firm and true. Lovely rose gold filled, totally un-worn large’onion’ crown. Original, gold filled, firm, very slightly worn Dennison safety bow (tiny bit of wear to top underside only from being carried on a watch chain over the years), which is correctly stamped to one side; DQ – Dennison Quality. Watch chain has been converted with a central t-bar with coin holder, some minor knocks to batten links. Sovereign holder is rolled gold stamped 20 years and is in excellent condition with no loss of plate and good movement it has been monogrammed. Circa 1901 based on the serial number. The watch case measures approx. 41.2mm in diameter. Size 6 or 6s. The white enamel dial is stamped AMERICAN WALTHAM and is in excellent shape. Brand new crystal (not shown in the photos). The original gold filled hunting case is in very good condition. Both lids open and close properly. Nice floral and scroll etching to both sides with inlaid green, yellow, rose , and white gold. I did acid test the case and it appears to be gold filled while the N and Cartouche test for 14K GOLD The inner rear cover is stamped WARRANTED PERMANENTLY 932493 The movement is stamped 11068xxx ADJUSTED A.
