FILLION Paris plain silver FULL HUNTER cased verge fusee pocket watch in great condition. Both side of the case is in good condition. Some little scratches, some very little dents can be found, but overall if you keep this watch in your hand you see an antique timepiece to fell in love with. The movement is a french (european style) verge fusee movement , and is all original. It has been taken apart, completely cleaned , and set together. It has the original chain too. Nice early XVIII brass sundial by Butterfield, Paris. The octagonal dial plate’s four hour scales, declination lines and numerals are engraved. The adjustable bird gnomon is finely engraved and markers for 40 to 60 degree latitudes, the bird’s beak acting as a pointer. The reverse is engraved with a table of latitudes with the names of sixteen cities, predominantly French, but also european capitals as London, Vienne, Madrid, Bruxelles, Basel, Milan and Turin. The compass bears the hallmark Fleur de Lys. Superb craftsmanship and elegant details belie its originality. The sundial measures 77 x 66mm. Case is 87 x 76 x 22mm. Comes in it’s original case of leather and green velvet (the case is in “as is” condition). The mineral glass is slightly domed. The hand of the compass is practically stuck. He arrived to France in 1663 and established manufactory of mathematical and astronomical instruments in Paris, firstly at faubourg Saint-Germain(1678) further at Quai de l’Horloge (1691). In 1680 under J. Cassini he made a planisphere for Royal Academy of Sciences in Paris. Being engineer of king Louis XIV for scientific instruments, he invented “quarts of circle” (instrument for measuring angles) and the sundial type, which got his name. We only sell 100% AUTHENTIC items. Antoine Lepine was a true great master of watchmaking in the 18th century and one of the founder of mechanical watchmaking. He revolutionized mechanical watch movement by getting rid of the fusee and still was able to design an accurate running movement. This is an authentic Lepine pocket watch made in the 1750s, in 22K (tested) gold case with enamel panel in the back and diamond adorned bezels in the front & back. Lepine was appointed’Royal Watchmaker’ by French royal court in 1766 and began signing his works since then, so this pocket watch lacks such designation was made before that year. All of the characteristics including dial, case and movement are all consistent with authentic Lepine work from that age. It’s simply incredible to find such an old timepiece made by or under the supervision of a true lengendary watchmaker. Condition-wise the watch is NOT RUNNING due to lack of mainspring power. We do not know if the mainspring is broken or loose but there is no power when wound. The fusee assembly including the chain is full intact and the balance swings freely. The wheel train is also working fine. Cosmetically this watch is showing its antique age, it has many cracks on the original dial, missing hands, and the lip of the case has detached from the back causing a rip in the case. It has previously been repaired (soldered) but has now has come apart again. The enamel panel on the caseback has worn where most of the forehead region of the ladies bust has worn down. There are also a few missing diamonds on the front and back bezels. There is no crystal present. Return can be made if the item received significantly deviate from the lot description and must be made within 3 days after receiving item.
