1893 Elgin National Watch Company, U. 18 size, seven jewels stem wind & set large antique pocket watch in excellent looking and running condition. The movement was professionally serviced recently, runs strong & keeps good time. The serial number on the grade 73 movement is 5366691 which dates it to 1893. The full plate seven jewel movement has a safety pinion and nice engraving on the balance arm. The single sunk porcelain enameled 24 hour dial with roman numerals is in very good condition with some light hairlines, and the deep blued steel hands are in fine condition. The crystal is a brand new G-S high dome acrylic model. The original Keystone Cyclone hinged cover model rolled gold filled case is in excellent condition for its age with light pocket wear, no dents. There are small, faded initials on the back which are not very noticeable looks like B. Please see the picture. The approximate case measurements are 2-1/4 inches in diameter (not including the bow & crown) x 3/4 inch thick including the crystal. The hinges work fine and the covers snap shut tight. The bow and winding crown are in very good condition with light wear. Included with your watch is a modern 12-3/4 inches long gold plated chain with nice large links. This is a nice original early timepiece that is well preserved. Great for everyday use, or would make a fine gift! Also great for Re-enactors. My pictures have many shadows, reflections and dust spots that will be cleaned; the watch looks fine in person! Please note that an antique watch may not be as accurate as a modern watch. In fact, Elgin produced approximately one-half of the total number of better-quality pocket watches manufactured in the United States. Total production over their 100 years of operation reached nearly 60 million watches, which is nearly 50% of ALL the jeweled watches produced by American watch companies! Their success can be attributed to their huge production of low to mid-grade watches… Together with the Waltham Watch Company, they dominated the huge market for mid-grade watches, producing over one-million per year during their peak years of production. Elgin watches remain extremely popular with collectors today because they are plentiful, can be obtained at reasonable prices, and can be relatively easily repaired due to the large number of watches and parts available. Throughout their history, the Elgin National Watch Company was known for horological innovations. In 1958, they introduced the “DuraBalance, ” an ingenious design for a free-sprung balance (no regulator pins) which used spiral balance arms and small weights to govern the moment of inertia of the balance. They also produced the only American-made automatic wristwatch movements: grades 607, 618, 760, and 761. These movements featured bi-directional, full-rotor winding, and had two automatic winding gear ratios, which were automatically engaged as the mainspring tension increased. The contributions of the Elgin National Watch Company to American Horological industry cannot be overstated. Many Elgin watches that were made over 100 years ago are still providing reliable and accurate daily service to their proud owners. Illinois Bunn Special 21 Jewel Railroad Pocket Watch. This Illinois railroad watch is 16 size (case diameter 50 mm). The movement is marked Bunn Special, with 21 jewels, raised gold jewel settings, gold center wheel, and is marked Adjusted Temp. And 6 Positions as required for railroad service. Themovement condition is exceptionally nice – I see no flaws. This watch is in the original “Bunn Special Model” railroad case. The case is pink gold filled with moderate wear, and has a ring of brass along the back edge, bezel, crown, and on the bow. The back has some extremely faint waves. This is an honest, original case that has been carried a fair bit. Most railroad pocket watches were working watches and were carried 6 or 7 days a week. The original, double sunk dial is porcelain and has correct plum-colored hands and bold numerals both correct for the time period. The dial has NO chips, and NO hairlines.
