Hamilton 4992B 24 Hour dial Military Pocket Watch. With MILITARY Case c1940. This is a 16 size 22 Jewel pocket watch made for the American military circa 1940. Movement this high grade nickel ¾ plate movement has a lever escapement with a micrometer regulator, a raised centre seconds wheel on the top plate and capped jewel settings. The movement features a hacking function when you pull out the winder to set the hands, the balance will stop enabling you to synchronize with other timepieces. The movement is decorated with slanted straight line damascening. The movement is signed Hamilton Watch Co, Lancaster, Pa, USA, 22 Jewels, 4992B, Adjusted Temp & 6 Positions # 4C134497. The movement is in 90% mint condition- come small marks. Case the movement comes in a base metal open face case, which has a screw off back and front. The back cover is engraved An 5740, FSSC NO. MFRS PART NO 33106, SERIAL NO H 13657. NO a(s) 3122, Hamilton Watch Co The case is in 80% mint condition the usual scratches found on a military case. Dial the black matt dial has a full set of white painted hands and has a 24 hour dial where the hands make on rotation every 24 hours instead of one. The dial is signed GCT and is in 95% mint condition – light marks only. The watch has a mineral glass. The watch is stem wound / stem set. The watch measures 51mm wide x 15mm deep. The watch comes in a heavy two part case with an inner section for the watch suspended by 4 springs to cushion the watch against knocks etc. The lid of the case has a revolving cover and glass. The cover has 2 locking slots and clasp. Very Early ¼ Hour Repeater Pocket Watch by Jodin in Fancy Silver Pair Case England; Jodin; Mans; Serial# 130; C. 1690 Complications: ¼ – hour repeater. 800 silver, 56mm, pair case feature floral, repousse and pierced decorations. DIAL: This white porcelain dial displays Roman numerals and Louis XIV hands. MOVT: This key-set movement with verge escapement is gilt with a full plate layout and is signed. C 3 (The case is in very good condition) D 3-57 (The dial is in very good condition, slightly restored) M 3 (The movement is in very good condition) R 9 (Rarity on a scale of #1 being very common to #10 being extremely rare) Both cases have elegant pierced designs with the outer case having a centered raised repousse motif on the back. Quarter Hour Repeater The quarter repeater strikes the number of hours, and then the number of quarter hours since the last hour. The mechanism uses 2 chimes of different tones. The low tone usually signals the hours, and the high tone the quarter hours. As an example, if the time is 2:45, the quarter repeater sounds 2 low tones and after a short pause 3 high ones: “dong, dong, ding, ding, ding”. Alternatively, some use a pair of tones to distinguish the quarter hours: “dong, dong, ding-dong, ding-dong, ding-dong”. Key-wind/Key-set Movements The very first pocket watches up until the third quarter of the 19th century had key-wind and key-set movements. A watch key was necessary to wind the watch and to set the time. This was usually done by opening the case back and putting the key over the winding-arbor (which was set over the watch’s winding-wheel, to wind the mainspring) or by putting the key onto the setting-arbor, which was connected with the minute-wheel and turned the hands. Some watches of this period had the setting-arbor at the front of the watch, so that removing the crystal and bezel was necessary to set the time. This watch includes a reproduction of the correct size key, it is not the original. Verge Fusee Escapement Used in antique spring-powered mechanical watches and clocks, a fusee is a cone-shaped pulley with a helical groove around it, wound with a cord or chain which is attached to the mainspring barrel. Fusees were used from the 15th century to the early 20th century to improve timekeeping by equalizing the uneven pull of the mainspring as it ran down. The mainspring is coiled around a stationary axle (arbor), inside a cylindrical box, the barrel. The force of the spring turns the barrel. Pair Case Higher end early verge fusee watches were often in a pair case. Pair case refers to when a pocket watch is placed within another case (nesting), therefore two cases. The outter protective case is often very decorative. There are also watches, such as those made for the Turkish Market, that had up to four cases, each nesting perfectly within each other and keeping the inner watch safe from damage. 16 size 23 jewel open face lever-set Bunn Special Grade 163 pocket watch. Beautiful example cased in a superb white gold-filled Bunn Special Model 107 case with distinctive “pagoda” style bow. Watch is fronted by a double-sunk enamel bold Arabic numeral dial with outward facing arrows at the 5-minute positions. Movement features gold jewel settings, gold balance screws, gold train wheels, rayed pattern nickel damaskeen, and 60 hour mainspring. Serial number is 5375214. Running and a beautiful movement with excellent color and luster. Dial is excellent with just some tiny edge flakes under the case bezel near the 2 O’clock area. This model was named after the the president of the company Jacob Bunn, a friend of President Abe Lincoln, Jacob Bunn had his main office in Chicago, reorganize Railroads help them raise financing. And was fanatical about new technology about accuracy. When the Bunn Special came out in the turn of the century it was a epitome of American watch making renowned around the world. This watch is over 92 years old serial number 5067542, circa 1928, type 3, model 14 16 size, 23 ruby jewels set with gold bushings, gold center wheel, 60 hours, adjusted to six wearing positions, and temperature. Stem winding and set with the lever after turning off crystal and bezel. Many times I have just watch this run in a glass dome wondering how something so beautifully and meticulously manufactured, could be made without CNC machines or modern day computers. The Two tone Especially made Bunn case has two plates of 14kt solid gold with a brass interior, think of it as an Oreo cookie. The inner brass gives it strength and keeps the price down but has the look of solid gold.
