Up for sale, antique Victorian French gilt brass and beveled glass pocket watch holder display case box, Grand Tour souvenir. The case is lined with cushioned silk. Top of the case has a reversed painting/collage of city square depicting statue on a high pedestal with background building. Bottom portion of the painting is decorated with mother of pearl fragments and printed title possible reads “A’NGERS – Statue de David d’Angers” The image is distorted and not very clear, possibly due to humidity. The case also has holding/hanging handle. Measurements: Height with handle up to 4 ½ inches- Height of the case 3 ¾ inches Width 2 3/8 inches Depth 1 ¾ inches. Condition: Silk lining is worn. Original Breguet ¼-Hour Repeater with Later Dial & Display Case Pocket Watch with Key France; Breguet; Mans; Serial #868; Circa: 1785 Complications: ¼-hour repeater. CASE: The rose gold-filled 18-size plain case features an open face. DIAL: This silver dial displays Roman numerals and Breguet hands. MOVT: This key-set #868 movement with hanging ruby cylinder escapement is gilt with a bridge style-cut-away layout. C 3-24 The case is in very good condition-later. D 3-36 The dial is in very good condition-later. M 3 The movement is in very good condition. R 9 Rarity on a scale of #1 being very common to #10 being extremely rare. Experts Opinion: Parachute shock system, compensation curb hanging ruby cylinder, ¼-hour repeater. Constructed by the master Breguet. Later cased in a lovely gold-filled glass back repeater case with Breguet style silver dial. A wonderful watch for the collection! Quarter Repeater The quarter repeater strikes the number of hours, and then the number of quarter hours since the last hour. The mechanism uses 2 chimes of different tones. The low tone usually signals the hours, and the high tone the quarter hours. As an example, if the time is 2:45, the quarter repeater sounds 2 low tones and after a short pause 3 high ones: “dong, dong, ding, ding, ding”. Alternatively, some use a pair of tones to distinguish the quarter hours: “dong, dong, ding-dong, ding-dong, ding-dong”. Key-wind/Key-set Movements The very first pocket watches up until the third quarter of the 19th century had key-wind and key-set movements. A watch key was necessary to wind the watch and to set the time. This was usually done by opening the case back and putting the key over the winding-arbor (which was set over the watch’s winding-wheel, to wind the mainspring) or by putting the key onto the setting-arbor, which was connected with the minute-wheel and turned the hands. Some watches of this period had the setting-arbor at the front of the watch, so that removing the crystal and bezel was necessary to set the time.
