Silver pocket watch, pair cases, verge, champleve dial – London, 1748. Silver pair cases, 49.75mm. An early London verge, with a fine champleve dial. MOVEMENT : Gilt verge movement, the engraved and pierced winged balance cock with wide D shaped foot. Four square baluster pillars, silver regulator disk and blued screws. The balance cock table has a small bracket on the edge, which allows it to be stabilised by a screw to the top plate. This feature is occasionally found on London watches of this period. Running well, and in good condition with a small repair visible to the base of the fusee cone where the chain is attached. Wright, LONDON and numbered (5034). DIAL : A fine silver champleve dial, in excellent condition. Signed WRIGHT, LONDON on the central disc. Good 18th century steel beetle and poker hands. INNER CASE : Silver, with worn hallmarks for London, 1748, makers mark? L and movement serial number (5034). In quite good condition, with a few light bruises to the band and the pendant has been reattached. The hinge is fine and the bezel snaps shut correctly. The high dome bulls eye crystal is fine. OUTER CASE : Silver pair case, with no hallmarks. Again again reasonable condition, but the catch and catch button are missing so the case does not snap shut. Gold pocket watch, repousse pair cases, champleve dial – Kipling, London, 1727. Gold repousse pair cases, 50 mm. An early London verge pocket watch, in fine gold repousse pair cases. MOVEMENT : Gilded verge escapement, with engraved and pierced winged balance cock. Four square baluster pillars, silver regulator disk and blued screws. Kipling, LONDON and numbered (1635). The movement is in very good original condition, and is running well. DIAL : Wonderful gold champleve dial, signed Kipling, LONDON. All in fine condition. Good earl;y 18th century blued steel beetle and poker hands. INNER CASE : 22ct gold, with London hallmarks for 1727, makers mark TP and movement serial number (1635). In reasonable condition but with some light bruises and slight compression around the band, and a short split to the band, just to the left of the hinge. Original bow and stem, though the stem has been reattached. The hinge is fine and the bezel snaps shut nicely. The high dome crystal is also fine. OUTER CASE : A wonderful gold repousse pair case, decorated with a scene showing a winged cherub, a woman in the centre playing a lute, and a dog to the right, all under a tree. Animals, a bird and fish around the edge of the back, and fine scroll decoration to the bezel. In very good condition, with just some light wear to the high points, mainly to the central figure. One short crack on the inside of the bezel at the catch (this is where the gold band was joined to form the bezel). The catch, catch button and hinge are fine and the bezel snaps shut correctly. William Kipling is listed in London between 1705 and 1737. The case maker is probably Thomas Potts of Fleet Street, London. Our company is based in the UK. A top frame in a marriage watchcases usually being open only for installing of a movement. That is why we designed our cases with very tightly fit press closing top frame, which made it better moisture proof. To open it first loosen the frame by very lightly hammering a scalpel or any very thin blade into the gap in 2/3 places. It should make a small gap. Than use thinly sharpened back case opener or knife. Be careful not to scratch edges of both top frame and the case body. Our cases are designed to fit most sizes of movements. Nevertheless when installing any movement a slight adjustment of the case is required. For example, depending on the movement, a hole for a stem could be drilled in position 3 or 12 and a hole for a pusher in any appropriate position for a movement. The diameter of movements which can be fitted without any further adjustment to the case is 41.5 mm with a dial diameter of 43 mm. However using a watchmaker’s lathe our cases can be prepared for movements up to 44.5 mm and dials for up to 45 mm. It is worth noting that some movements have superfluous overhangs in the main plate. These could be easily turned, cutting down the diameter of the movement. When preparing antique movements for marriage watches we strongly recommend using a professional watchmaker familiar with the process. This is a Running! 1789 Verge Fusee Pocket Watch with paired sterling cases 50mm/56mm made in England for a Watchmaker named Alex Millor who had his shop in Perth Scotland. It keeps fairly accurate time for being 230 years old. Maybe 10 minutes in 24 hours. The cases are both in nice condition with no major dings or scratches. The workmanship inside is amazing. It all works great. All the little papers were inside when I won this a couple years ago and they live inside the first case to keep the inside case and movement nice and snug. MOVEMENT : Good quality verge movement, fully signed and numbered. Large balance cock, wonderfully engraved and pierced with two birds and two masks. Four fine Egyptian pillars. All in good original condition and running well. Signed Vindemil, London and numbered 423. DIAL : Later white enamel dial (probably late 18thc or early 19thc), in reasonable condition with no repairs but four light hairlines radiating from the centre. Fancy gilt hands, the hour possibly repaired at the base. INNER CASE : Silver, with rubbed makers mark IG? The hinge and high dome bulls eye crystal are fine and the case closes correctly. The silver is in good condition with just the usual compression around the band. The bow is slightly distorted and the pendant is a brass replacement. OUTER CASE : Silver, with no makers marks visible. The silver is in good condition with just some very minor bruises. The hinge has one broken sleeve, but still holds the bezel correctly.
