Silver pocket watch, pair cases, sun & moon wandering hour dial, London, c1690. Silver pair cases, 53 mm. A late 17th century London verge, with a beautiful wandering hour, sun & moon dial , in silver pair cases. MOVEMENT : Gilt verge movement, with finely pierced balance cock and plate, four wonderful wide gate type pillars pierced with trailing foliage, and silver regulator disk. The balance cock table is beautifully engraved with two birds. Signed John Ewer fecit. In very good condition, and running. DIAL : A beautiful silver champleve wandering hour or retrograde dial, with central revolving disk, marking the day time hour with the sun, and the night time with the moon. Signed as the movement. There are a few very light scratches to the blue background of the disk, but generally all in fine condition. Excellent gilt minute hand, of the period, and probably original. INNER CASE : Silver, with rubbed makers mark. The hinge is fine and the bezel closes correctly. The high dome crystal is fine. The stem and bezel are slightly later replacements (mid 18th century). OUTER CASE : Fine silver outer, with no makers marks. Nice large square hinge. The hinge and catch are fine (though the button is worn) and the bezel closes correctly. John Ewer is listed as making in London in and around 1690. A maker of this name was also apprenticed to Luke Bird in 1687. Silver pair cased Verge pocket watch J. Case BN London 1796. A beautifully elegant pair cased verge watch by the famous London maker James Freeman. In a paired case with correct hallmarks for London 1796. Incuse makers mark BN, with pellet between initials is for Bartholomew Need 13 Bridgewater Square and 6 Cross Street Clerkenwell. Mark entered 6.8.1787 (Grimwade section V and VI). Dimensions: Outer case 5.7cm diameter x 2.6cm. Inner case 4.8cms diameter x 2.5cm. Length of watch including suspension loop: 7.6cm. Condition: The enamel face is clear and clean. There is a very faint hairline between 11 and 12 (very hard to see with the naked eye – see photographs). Fob hanger is secure but skew. The outer case is missing its catch button. I have not attempted to wind the watch and the workings appear complete. The workmanship on the movement is exquisite. Items like this shed light onto a distant time and underline the fact that craftsmanship and the ability to make extraordinary things by hand was a common currency. Looks ok bridge cock tipycal brockbanks type. Very unusual compensation curb this type. Was used on polar expeditions at that time. Although i can not find any records chain is. On cases not bad condition screw in the case. Lower part of bezel to hold movement or lock it in. Not there minor problem will need some work to repair. But well worth it for a rare watch. Up for sale, is a beautiful, large, and rare silver pair case verge fusee antique pocket watch, with an amazing set enamel plaque repousse outer case, and a lovely chamlpleve dial, with a date indicator, circa 1740. The watch has just been cleaned and serviced and the movement is in perfect working condition. It runs to the end of the fusee chain in all positions very smoothly and keeps very good time. The beautiful fire gilt movement is signed. Three arm steel balance. Beautiful engraved top plate and balance cock. Main spring barrel with worm – classic feature for early verge movements. The movement is in wonderful condition. Is very well listed in all the reference books. Numbered 4258 – the same number as the movement. Amazing mint condition enamel set plaque in a beautiful repousse case. Dial: Classic arcaded silver champleve stunning dial with a date indicator. Early original signed: Wilter, London. The dial with Roman numerals for the hours and Arabic outside numerals for the minutes. Fully functional date indicator. Beautiful engraved birds in the center. As mentioned, it is a large and heavy silver pair case pocket watch. The silver inner case is 47 mm wide and the silver outer case is 55 mm. The watch weighs 131 grams.
