The silver cases have matching hallmarks for London 1768/9, initials’WM’ (with crown above for William Matthews I believe). The cases are in good condition, as per photos. The hinges are tight and covers lock shut (flush finish all round when shut), the catch on the outer cover is in good working order. The outer case measures 52mm in diameter and the inner case 42mm in diameter. The convex enamel dial is in good condition, a couple of small very faint scratches. The bulls-eye glass crystal is in good condition. The hands are in good condition. The very decorative movement is signed’T Whiskin, London’ and numbered’20′. The movement is in good clean condition and working order (just ran for 24 hours from full wind and lost 20 minutes over that time). The movement runs in all positions apart from face down where it tends to stop on occasion. The movement includes square pillars, external mainspring tensioner and a decorative scroll finish to the movement latch spring. The movement is key wind and set, which work fine, key included. Silver pocket watch, pair cases, verge, champleve dial – London, 1748. Silver pair cases, 49.75mm. An early London verge, with a fine champleve dial. MOVEMENT : Gilt verge movement, the engraved and pierced winged balance cock with wide D shaped foot. Four square baluster pillars, silver regulator disk and blued screws. The balance cock table has a small bracket on the edge, which allows it to be stabilised by a screw to the top plate. This feature is occasionally found on London watches of this period. Running well, and in good condition with a small repair visible to the base of the fusee cone where the chain is attached. Wright, LONDON and numbered (5034). DIAL : A fine silver champleve dial, in excellent condition. Signed WRIGHT, LONDON on the central disc. Good 18th century steel beetle and poker hands. INNER CASE : Silver, with worn hallmarks for London, 1748, makers mark? L and movement serial number (5034). In quite good condition, with a few light bruises to the band and the pendant has been reattached. The hinge is fine and the bezel snaps shut correctly. The high dome bulls eye crystal is fine. OUTER CASE : Silver pair case, with no hallmarks. Again again reasonable condition, but the catch and catch button are missing so the case does not snap shut. Silver pair cased Verge pocket watch J. Case BN London 1796. A beautifully elegant pair cased verge watch by the famous London maker James Freeman. In a paired case with correct hallmarks for London 1796. Incuse makers mark BN, with pellet between initials is for Bartholomew Need 13 Bridgewater Square and 6 Cross Street Clerkenwell. Mark entered 6.8.1787 (Grimwade section V and VI). Dimensions: Outer case 5.7cm diameter x 2.6cm. Inner case 4.8cms diameter x 2.5cm. Length of watch including suspension loop: 7.6cm. Condition: The enamel face is clear and clean. There is a very faint hairline between 11 and 12 (very hard to see with the naked eye – see photographs). Fob hanger is secure but skew. The outer case is missing its catch button. I have not attempted to wind the watch and the workings appear complete. The workmanship on the movement is exquisite. Items like this shed light onto a distant time and underline the fact that craftsmanship and the ability to make extraordinary things by hand was a common currency. MOVEMENT : Good quality verge movement, fully signed and numbered. Large balance cock, wonderfully engraved and pierced with two birds and two masks. Four fine Egyptian pillars. All in good original condition and running well. Signed Vindemil, London and numbered 423. DIAL : Later white enamel dial (probably late 18thc or early 19thc), in reasonable condition with no repairs but four light hairlines radiating from the centre. Fancy gilt hands, the hour possibly repaired at the base. INNER CASE : Silver, with rubbed makers mark IG? The hinge and high dome bulls eye crystal are fine and the case closes correctly. The silver is in good condition with just the usual compression around the band. The bow is slightly distorted and the pendant is a brass replacement. OUTER CASE : Silver, with no makers marks visible. The silver is in good condition with just some very minor bruises. The hinge has one broken sleeve, but still holds the bezel correctly. A late 17th century London verge, with a beautiful wandering hour, sun & moon dial , in silver pair cases. MOVEMENT : Gilt verge movement, with finely pierced balance cock and plate, four wonderful wide gate type pillars pierced with trailing foliage, and silver regulator disk. The balance cock table is beautifully engraved with two birds. Signed John Ewer fecit. In very good condition, and running. DIAL : A beautiful silver champleve wandering hour or retrograde dial, with central revolving disk, marking the day time hour with the sun, and the night time with the moon. Signed as the movement. There are a few very light scratches to the blue background of the disk, but generally all in fine condition. Excellent gilt minute hand, of the period, and probably original. INNER CASE : Silver, with rubbed makers mark. The hinge is fine and the bezel closes correctly. The high dome crystal is fine. The stem and bezel are slightly later replacements (mid 18th century). OUTER CASE : Fine silver outer, with no makers marks. Nice large square hinge. The hinge and catch are fine (though the button is worn) and the bezel closes correctly. John Ewer is listed as making in London in and around 1690. A maker of this name was also apprenticed to Luke Bird in 1687.
