The watch has not been cleaned and serviced but the movement is in good working condition. It runs to the end of the fusee chain very smoothly and keeps very good time. 80 minutes fast for 24 hours – very good time keeping for an early verge like this. The half quarter repeater functions well and sounds loud and clear. The movement: Three arm gilt balance. Beautiful engraved balance cock. Push pendant half quarter repeater, two hammers on a bell. The beautiful fire gilt movement is signed. Ch’ Leroy, A Paris. The maker is a. Member of the great LEROY family of watchmakers in Paris in the 18th century. The case: Silver, near mint condition. Engraved On The Movement G C T. Included is the Rare Brass U. Army Aircraft watch case with glass intact as pictured!!!! WWII 4992B Pocket Watch History. During World War II, Hamilton produced a variety of time pieces to support the war effort. In fact, all of Hamilton’s production was dedicated to defense purposes. However, they did still produce some wrist watches using excess movements produced in the 1920′s. One of the war-related watches was a pocket watch with a central sweep second hand. The movement was based on the 21 jewel, 16 size 992B movement. However, an extra jewel was added to support the second hand pinion, so the movement got 22 jewels and was called the 4992B. The 4992B is known as a “Navigator’s Watch” as it was used by aviators to aid in navigation by the US Navy during the war. Here’s a couple of advertisements from WWII-era Life Magazines that featured the 4992B. You’ll often see 4992B’s in a case or a box that was intended to isolate it and protect it from shocks or accidental damage. If you look closely at the dial, you’ll see that it’s a 24 hour dial so it takes a full day for the hour hand to make a full rotation. 12:00 noon on a 24 hour dial looks like 6:00 on a 12-hour dial. The minute hand still makes it around the dial in one hour, so the ratio of the minute hand to the hour hand is modified using a different minute wheel and hour wheel ratio. Movement : The watch is in very good running condition and it keeps very good time. The beautiful Rail Road grade movement has 23 jewels, ruby jewels, adjusted to 5 positions, and raised gold screw settings, gold balance weights, two diamond end stones, and a nice high grade regulator. It looks very nice and is in great condition. Dial : The original Waltham double sunk dial is in great condition. The dial has a hairline. Case : The gold filled case appears to have been used very little. It is in really great condition, showing no wear or brass, but has a slight ding on the back. The covers screw on and off as they should, although the front cover screws a little tight. This very fine watch is ready to display or carry! Porcelain Dial shows a chip at the 11 minute mark where the lever hits and it has some tight hairlines throughout as shown. Howard Keystone Extra Gold Filled Case shows unpolished having light scratches throughout with no wear through to the gold plating and still maintains about 95% of the original engine turned detailing. There are no dents in the back of the case however, there is 1 small flat spot on the side at the 9 position. Crystal is in good condition having light scratches throughout. Great example of an original E. Howard 23 Jewel watch housed in a case you will rarely ever see in this condition.
