Mint condition solid and superb English made by John Charles of Portsea, 1825 silver cased verge fusee. Solid sterling silver pair case is Silver hall marked (k) 1825 from London assay. Absolutely flawless mint condition white colored porcelain dial with stunning Solid Gold matching hands and large 60 second sub seconds hand, which functions beautiful. Outstanding spotless high domed bullseye crystal. All case covers open, close and fit perfect together with great hinges. Key wind and key set pocket watch runs full length of chain. Balance has super motion and the main spring is nice and strong. The balance bridge is uniquely amazing and ornate with a beautiful large Diamond end stone. The movement is super clean with a unique stop/start switch that functions perfect. The movement and sub seconds hand, stops and then starts right up again when the switch is moved back. Pocket watch is regulated by a right side push arrow index. The watch measures approx. 56mm excluding the bow. Pocket watch runs outstanding and keeps great fusee time, last checked about +/- 1 or 2 minuetswithin approx. 24 hour period hanging from a hook in the vertical position…….. But cannot guarantee accuracy upon sale. These watches are verge type. Meant to keep time, not perfect time 191 years ago. Pocket watch listed in the watch and clock makers of the world book as Charles, John. There is an old Watch and Clock makers paper from Lurcan (Ireland) inside the case. Watch comes with a sharp key for winding. Note all of my pocket watches have been personally serviced and restored to there best working order according to there age and condition. This fine antique watch is in excellent working order, with a dead flat and true balance wheel motion that has a fine, wide arc and strong, steady beat. The movement is a smooth wind, starts right up on my 8th wind with no coaxing, and lever sets as designed. The movement holds excellent time but has not been further regulated or adjusted! Railroad watches in original gold cases are scarce. Railroad watches in gold cases bearing the name of the watch making company are items that come once in the lifetime of a watch collector. This watch is one of those rare events. It has a Hamilton 950, 23 jewels movement. It’s 16 size and lever set. The dial is the highest grade enamel dial Hamilton produced. It has Roman numerals something never or very rarely seen on RR watches.. The dust cover is inscribed: Hamilton Watch Co. Lancaster, PA, Margaret to Cottie, May 5, 1923, 14kt. The 14kt shows on the inside of the back cover & also on the inside of the dust cover. The movement is beautifully damaskeened. The 950 Hamilton movement arguably is one of the nicest watch movements ever made. I think this is one of the early 950s, the ones with gold train. I had my watchmaker take the watch apart to show the back of the dial. 1 The dial looks like it should have been a 4 footed 16 size Hamilton enamel dial but it was at the last moment converted to a 3 footed one. Please look at the lines of flow of the enamel. 2 The front plate of the 950 movement has 3 receptor holes just to fit that specially modified dial. I have not seen this before and I have owned many 950, 950B & even one 951 over the years. The watch is in great condition. It runs well, keeps good time but has not been recently serviced. It was a showpiece, a collection’s watch. If you plan to wear it daily as a timekeeper, a servicing would protect your investment. Gondolos stratagem in Brazil Patek Philippe was one of the first watchmaking firms to enjoy business relations with the United States, dating from 1851, when it signed an exclusive agreement with Tiffany & Co. The founders letters, carefully preserved in Patek Philippes archives, are a fascinating record of the perils to which the traveller was exposed at that time. The firm had been present in Latin America since the 1870s, but sales in this market really took off towards the end of the nineteenth century, when business relations began with distributors Gondolo & Labouriau, in Rio de Janeiro. Carlos Gondolo and his partner, Paulo Labouriau, had devised an ingenious sales method. This consisted of a buyers club for 180 watch enthusiasts. The first week, the members paid ten dollars a week and then drew lots, with the winner acquiring a Patek Philippe. The timepiece in question was the celebrated Chronometro Gondolo, a calibre specially created for Gondolo and found in no other Patek Philippe timepiece. The second week, the remaining 179 members again paid ten dollars, and so on until the seventy-ninth week, when all the remaining members, each of whom had paid 790 dollars, received a Patek Philippe watch. The trade name Chronometro Gondolo was registered at 8 oclock on March 10, 1902 under the N° 14401. The Chronometro Gondolo was manufactured with a range of watch-cases (in gold, in silver or in niello silver), dials (divided in 12 or 24 hours) and hands. The movement diameters varied between 10 to 22 lines, a unit of measurement used for indicating the size of the movement. A line is equivalent to 2.256 mm giving rise to cases from 32 to 57 mm in size.
