Offered is an 18s Elgin 23J Veritas RR pocket watch. The watch has flaws: the dial should be replaced, and it is not running due to at least a bad balance staff. However, the Boss 25 year case is crisp and nearly new – glass crystal, stiff bow, only flaw is minor scratching near where the back separates from the body, not distracting and mentioned only for accuracy. The movement with it’s gold train and jewel settings and diamond cap jewels is stunning. The case is marked Philadelphia 20 years and case has virtually no wear. All the engraving is still nice and crisp. Crystal is very nice with no scratches. Hands are nice with no rust. It has a beautiful double sunk dial which has no hairlines but there is a flea bite nick above the 12 which is covered by bezel. Serial number is 8401902 which dates to 1899. It has a diamond end stone and a gold train. It winds and sets and keeps time but I have no service record so it should be serviced. I wound up the watch and after 24 hours with the face of the watch up it was 30 seconds fast. This is one of Elgin? S best railroad watches and is in close to mint condition. It will be a long time before you get another chance to own a beautiful watch like this!!! This is an excellent antique Elgin 18 size 21 jewel Veritas pocket watch in a Defiance base metal case out of an estate! The lever-set movement has is marked: Veritas Elgin, Ill. 9348750 Safety Barrel 21 Jewels Adjusted. The double-sunk dial is simply marked Elgin. The dial is in fair condition, there are some hairlines in the finish, and repaired chips – see photos. The original glass crystal is in fair condition, there are some light scratches. The case is in good condition, there are light scratches, and no wear-through in the finish. The train engraved on the case back looks excellent! Inside of the case back is marked: DEFIANCE 3313883.
