Pocket Watch Case

Today I have for sale an extremely nice example of the Bunn Special model 163 with in exceptionally nice condition. The dial is the highly desirable marked version which is in absolutely perfect condition. Usually these dials have hairlines or chips but this one is absolutely flawless. The case is a model 173 and it is also in spectacular condition. There is almost no noticeable wear at all and no dents. The beautiful engraving on the back is still nice and crisp. The only thing you can notice on the case is slight wearing of the gold filling around the crown which is very minor. The movement is beautiful and super clean. It is running well and keeping time. This is one of the nicest examples I have ever seen of one of the best railroad watches from the time period. Please let me know if you have any questions. Not only this watch is rare do to being a sixty hour signed movement but it is also rare because it is housed in a original and solid Sangamo Special 14 karat Green Gold Case. Movement serial number 4758916, made in 1926. It works well and keeps excellent time. Dial is glass enameled double sunk Montgomery style. One hairline at 26 minute mark and surface scratch at 1 o’clock. Diamond shape blued steel hands are 100% original and in great shape. Solid 14 karat green gold and original Sangamo Special. Hinges are very strong, only wear is on the bow and crown. Covers open and close perfectly. This beautiful watch came from a family member’s estate. It is an Illinois Watch Company model known as the Bunn Special. The serial number is 5568834. It has 21 Jewels. Either I do not know how or there is a problem – but I was not able to set the time. However, it does wind and keeps time well – and the second hand works properly. The case is marked Star Case Co. 10K Gold Filled – Serial # 1871632. There are minor scratches to the back of the case. There are no scratches to the crystal. Also included is the original Simmons yellow gold 11 watch chain and T bar. The entire piece could use a good cleaning. This fine 23-jewel 60-hour model is in superb working order, with an excellent balance motion that is flat, true, wide-arced and strong-running. The movement is a smooth wind, starts right up on a dime with no added effort, and lever sets as designed. The movement holds time well within 30 seconds per week face-up after years of prolonged and careful hand-regulating. Here’s Illinois’ 1930s era elegant #28, with a wide, smooth back framed by concentric circle patterns and delicate milling, a railroad-thick neck, wide, wind-able crown, and distinctively designed arching bow! This much sought after case is in fully serviceable condition. I have restored and detailed this case right down to the threads so you get the best looking and working case possible! The back and bezel thread up easily, screw on and off smoothly, and both seat tight. The matching original crown’s fluting is well defined for a tight, sure grip, and it turns freely but, by design, does not extract, so only a lever-set e. Bunn Special movement will work inside. The bow is also its correct original, shows light brass but zero damage, and swings loose. The crystal is a thick beveled glass model and is brand new – recently installed. The case does show very, very minimal wear, including light, evenly distributed carrying wear, zero doodlings, one screwmark inside the back but no other marrings, a light ring of brass around the exposed edges of the watch, and best of all, certifiably no dents, dings, dimples or depressions!! 18 size 21 jewel open face lever-set Bunn Special pocketwatch. Good looking high grade railroad grade watch, this example is from the later end of production as the 18 size Bunn Specials in the 4.4 million serial number range were produced in about 1923 and were the last 18 size railroad grade watches that Illinois made. Watch is fronted by its correct double-sunk enamel dial and is housed in a nickel glassback display case that shows off the movement very nicely. Movement serial number is 4432248. Running and a nice looking movement with good color and luster. Balance jewel setting is missing a screw. Dial is excellent with just a small curved hairline near the edge between the 11 minute and 13 minute positions. Case is in good condition with a nice in hand look and feel.
