The glass crystal is in excellent condition, no scratches, chips or cracks. It has a white porcelain dial with black Roman numeral hour markers. The dial is unsigned and is in good condition with no hairlines but some repairs down around 6. The Sterling Pair Case is nicely repouseed on the back outer case. The case is in good condition, with lots of wear and some repairs to the inner part of the outer case. The case measures 45.44 mm in diameter not including the hinges or neck. MOVEMENT : Gilt verge movement, the engraved and pierced winged balance cock with wide D shaped foot. Four square baluster pillars, silver regulator disk and blued screws. The balance cock table has a small bracket on the edge, which allows it to be stabilised by a screw to the top plate. This feature is occasionally found on London watches of this period. Running well, and in good condition with a small repair visible to the base of the fusee cone where the chain is attached. Wright, LONDON and numbered (5034). DIAL : A fine silver champleve dial, in excellent condition. Signed WRIGHT, LONDON on the central disc. Good 18th century steel beetle and poker hands. INNER CASE : Silver, with worn hallmarks for London, 1748, makers mark? L and movement serial number (5034). In quite good condition, with a few light bruises to the band and the pendant has been reattached. The hinge is fine and the bezel snaps shut correctly. The high dome bulls eye crystal is fine. Silver pair cased Verge pocket watch J. Case BN London 1796. A beautifully elegant pair cased verge watch by the famous London maker James Freeman. In a paired case with correct hallmarks for London 1796. Incuse makers mark BN, with pellet between initials is for Bartholomew Need 13 Bridgewater Square and 6 Cross Street Clerkenwell. Mark entered 6.8.1787 (Grimwade section V and VI). Dimensions: Outer case 5.7cm diameter x 2.6cm. Inner case 4.8cms diameter x 2.5cm. Length of watch including suspension loop: 7.6cm. Condition: The enamel face is clear and clean. There is a very faint hairline between 11 and 12 (very hard to see with the naked eye – see photographs). Fob hanger is secure but skew. The outer case is missing its catch button. I have not attempted to wind the watch and the workings appear complete. The workmanship on the movement is exquisite. Items like this shed light onto a distant time and underline the fact that craftsmanship and the ability to make extraordinary things by hand was a common currency. MOVEMENT : Gilt verge movement, the engraved and pierced balance cock with an engraved bird to the neck. Four square baluster pillars, silver regulator disk and blued screws. Running well, and in good condition. Abchurch and numbered 4488. DIAL : A fine white enamel dial, in excellent condition, with just a few light surface scratches. Later blued steel hands. INNER CASE : Gilt brass. In good condition, though there is wear to the gilding, especially on the bezel, stem and bow. The stem has been reattached. The hinge is fine and the bezel snaps shut correctly. The high dome bulls eye crystal is fine. OUTER CASE : Underpainted horn covering the gilt brass pair case. The painting shows butterflies on a seaweed background. Again in good condition. The catch is complete and the case snaps shut correctly, though the catch button is worn. The horn is in good condition with no cracks to the back and just one to the bezel. There is only one pin missing on the back and seven from the bezel. Good British verge fusee pocket watch in silver pair case. Diameter of outer case is 55mm, thickness is 32mm. Nice champleve dial and movement are signed by Massy London. Cuss in his book “The English Watch” shows the watch similarly signed by Maßsy p. 146, attributing it to Henry Massy about 1710. It’s worth to note, that his father, Nicholas Massy, French born (Blois) French Huguenot, emigrated to London about 1680, he became member of Clockmaking company in 1682 and died at 1698. Cuss, cock with D-shaped leg, steel balance wheel, barrel with endless worm stopwork. It can be dated to 1710s. The movement is not numbered, as well as the watch illustrated by Cuss. Champleve silver dial is in good condition. Inner Case is in good condition with some period wear. Outer case has old crack and soldering near the top of back cover.
