Up for sale is an interesting sterling silver repousse English verge fusee pocketwatch with a fancy painted dial. The outer case is about 47mm in diameter. The repousse scene shows some wear. The porcelain dial has a wonderful painted scene. The dial has a few hairlines and a small chip on the number 25. The painted section is fine. The glass crystal is not high domed like it should be, and the cannon pinion has been shortened to accommodate the lower crystal. The movement is signed Wm Crayton London. The fusee movement runs for a while, and then stops. Due to the nature of verge movements, I cannot guarantee the accuracy of the watch or that the movement will run continuously. This is a antique verge fusee pair cased pocket watch from 1772. This is a nice square pillar watch, the fusee chain Is detached and the balance wheel needs some work. However this is a lovely clean movement and it is such a lovely size. The movement is signed by T. Betson London” number “3081. Betson was well known for making Pained cow horn watches of which this is a quintessential example. Overall this is a beautiful movement and the engraving on the balance cock is exceptional. This is a painted horn example which means the cow horn is made to look like tortoise shell. Then a layer of paper is placed under the horn, and that is the exotic pattern you can see coming though. The case is made of guilt metal then gold studs have been added to hold down the horn. Inside the outer case is a original watch paper, this is a nice part of the watches history and we know from looking at that, that the watch once lived on the Isle of Wight. In summary the outer case is in reasonable condition the only problem is a bit of horn is missing from the case but apart from that it in good condition, the case also closes well. The inner case is made of silver and has the London hallmark for 1772 overall the inner case is in good condition. However at some point in its life the handle has been soldered but it is now Secure. The dial, crystal and hands. The Hans are original and are made of pierced blued steel. The crystal is original and is still clear. Finally the dial is made of enamel and is a well used example of a late 18th century watch dial. Finally this is a lovely watch and would be a great part of anyone’s collection. A very interesting and most important large triple case Doctors watch in mint condition under painted horn case watch. MADE BY JOHN WARD LONDON. The watch runs well. C + OR- 2- 3 minutes per hour. To stop the watch there is a slider by 10 move it up or down to stop and start. 1775 Silver Pair Case Square Pillar Verge Painted Dial Chatelaine Pocket Watch. Although signed Wilders London the bridge balance staff cock tends to tell a different story ie that this watch was probably made in Holland and is Dutch in origin , or made elsewhere on the continent for the Dutch market. The inner case though is London made and is hallmarked London 1775 while the original outer repousse case is, as is usual, unmarked (there are some small holes i n this caused by wear that you can see in the photos). It comes with its original silver key but this is too worn to use. I will supply a properly fitting key alongside the original one. The watch is in very nice condition otherwise goes well and still keeps good time. A lovely old item.
