Illinois Bunn Special, 60 Hour, 21 Jewel, Railroad Pocket Watch. This Illinois Bunn Special Model is 16 size (case diameter 51mm). The movement is marked Sixty Hour, 21 jewels, Adj. And is lever set, has gold jewel settings, gold train, micrometer regulator, and all the special features you’d expect on a genuine American Railroad Watch. Movement condition is very nice although some of the color has come out of the lettering engraving, a common occurence. Dial is original, bold numeral painted metal in nice original condition with some slight darkening to the outer chapter. The case is original and marked, in scarce pink or rose gold filled. The case does have wear and brass as shown, but if polished, the brass color is very close to the pink gold and so does not show very much. Nice, honest original Bunn railroad watch. This watch runs and keeps reasonable time: within 5 minutes or LESS per day. I do not know the history of this watch, so it may need to be serviced. Sorry, this is NOT a “Make Offer” listing. This is a truly rare model mans Hamilton watch. It is 16 size, open face, stem wind and pendant set. 17 jewels, bridge model. Adjusted, serial #50833 dates this movement to 1901. It is a grade 964 movement, from a run of only 100 pieces, and a total production of only 340 pieces ever!!! The movement plates are excellent, and not scratched, abused, or overcleaned. Also, it is marked with the Hamilton name, and not a retailers name, which makes it more desirable. The movement is a strong runner. I have not had it cleaned or serviced, so I cannot guarantee it to be a reliable timekeeper. The porcelain dial is very good, with a fine hairline near 1 oclock. The CASE IS ORIGINAL! This is highly unusual for this model. The case is plain, screw back & bezel. Marked Fahys MONTAUK GUARANTEED 20 YEARS. The case has is not brassed. It has no dents on the case back, and no monograms. There is one very slight edge dent, but that is all! The case has no extra screw marks, and has only ever held this movement. Case maker mark “Fly” for Association Ouvriere / Locle. Case and movement have identical numbers, minimal restoration of the tula decoration over the hinge area. Otherwice in mint condition. Fine, perfectly preserved anchor chronometer movement , grained and gilded, with Guillaume chronometer balance, straight line lever escapement, Breguet overcoil with end curve, gold train, index fine adjustment. Signed, perfectly preserved enamel dial , blued spade steel hands. Dial and hands in perfect condition. The watch is in the original box with original chronometer certificate from 1907, submitted by Paul D. Nardin, Observatory Chronometer 1st class. There is also a handwritten accompanying letter. Diameter: 58mm, Weight: 161g, original mahogany casket 17x12cm ; in excellent condition. In this completely original state of preservation with original papers and original box, the watch is an absolute rarity – it is the only observatory chronometer with a niello decoration known to me! This was my father in laws wrist watch. He passed away in’74 & we just “re-found” it in the closet! It’s been here, there & everywhere! As you can tell by the wear on the watch band, he wore it often. It still works beautifully. It is Not in excellent condition, cosmetically speaking. The crystal has some scratches, commensurate to age & wear. The 750 gold case has some scratches as shown in pictures, & the gold wash on wrist band, has quite a bit if wear! Band CAN be replaced, as it is Not built in! It’s still a great deal on this HUGUENIN, Swiss wrist watch. It works perfectly but, needs professional diamond dust polishing. The original dial gives this watch a special edge. Pair Case Higher end early verge fusee watches were often in a pair case. Pair case refers to when a pocket watch is placed within another case (nesting), therefore two cases. The outter protective case is often very decorative. There are also watches, such as those made for the Turkish Market, that had up to four cases, each nesting perfectly within each other and keeping the inner watch safe from damage. Key-wind/Key-set Movements The very first pocket watches up until the third quarter of the 19th century had key-wind and key-set movements. A watch key was necessary to wind the watch and to set the time. This was usually done by opening the case back and putting the key over the winding-arbor (which was set over the watch’s winding-wheel, to wind the mainspring) or by putting the key onto the setting-arbor, which was connected with the minute-wheel and turned the hands. Some watches of this period had the setting-arbor at the front of the watch, so that removing the crystal and bezel was necessary to set the time. Verge Fusee Escapement Used in antique spring-powered mechanical watches and clocks, a fusee is a cone-shaped pulley with a helical groove around it, wound with a cord or chain which is attached to the mainspring barrel. Fusees were used from the 15th century to the early 20th century to improve timekeeping by equalizing the uneven pull of the mainspring as it ran down. The mainspring is coiled around a stationary axle (arbor), inside a cylindrical box, the barrel. The force of the spring turns the barrel.
