Pocket Watch Case

This is a rare and early Illinois Watch Company (Springfield Illinois) 1887 18s 7j Key Wind Pocket Watch with Chicago Coin Silver case. It runs great and includes key and fob. The serial number on the movement is 836648 which dates this to 1887. The case is stamped “Chicago Coin” with the crescent logo which dates the case to about 1885. It is made of coin silver which is 90% silver. The watch was cleaned and serviced by a local jeweler in 2008 which is marked on the inside of the movement cover. The clear crystal on the front is made of plastic and does have scratches but free of cracks. The white watch face itself has a few hairlines between 3 and 4 o’clock, and also between 7 and 8 o’clock. The case has some dents mainly near the hinge for the face (see pics). Illinois 18s Bunn Special RR 21J 2-tone Original 4oz Coin Silver Running Great! A fine 21 jewel railroad timepiece. This watch is running strong after a full service in 2021 and keeping good time. The 2-Tone is strong and the plates are beautifully damaskeened. The case appears to be original to the movement and is 4oz coin silver by Keystone. The covered open and close as they should. The case shows moderate wear. The watch runs strong and the lever-set / stem wound movement functions as new. Excellent balance amplitude and nice and flat. The original porcelain dial is very good but does have a small chip at 12:00 that is covered by the bezel. I also note a very fine hairline between 5 and 6. Overall, the watch presents very well. Vintage Seth Thomas Pocket Watch Illinois Sterling Silver Case READ! This watch does run. The main issue is that the back of the watch is extremely difficult to remove and for that matter attach. I did get it off for the photos but wasn’t able to take it back off again once I replaced it and didn’t want to force it. The front does screw on and off without too much difficulty.
