This unusual piece comes in its own seemingly custom made case (lacking its main case back). The front is screw down, the back pops off. Pictures taken without the front as the crystal is quite yellowed. From the reverse the movement seems nothing special, from the front its quite complicated. The watch is winding and ticking away nicely. It will need servicing as it is visually dirty. But the button needs 3 presses to revert back to its original position/cycle. Rare Verge Fusee English Repousse Pair Case with Scenic Painted Porcelain Dial England; Mathew Pratt; Mans; Serial #20,569; Circa 1770 CASE: The sterling silver 16-size pair case features an open face, repousse decorations, and is signed R. DIAL: This fancy scenic white porcelain dial displays Roman numerals and filigree hands. MOVT: This key set movement with verge/fuse escapement is gilt with a full plate layout and is signed. C 3-16 (Case is in Very Good Condition – slightly worn) D 3-43-53 (Dial is in Very Good Condition – hairline – very slightly chipped) M 3 (Movement is in Very Good Condition) R 8.5 (#1 is considered common to #10, which is an extremely rare item) Very attractive verge fusee, repousse case shows wear but evenly. Dial is still with sharp colors. Pair Case Higher end early verge fusee watches were often in a pair case. Pair case refers to when a pocket watch is placed within another case (nesting), therefore two cases. The outter protective case is often very decorative. There are also watches, such as those made for the Turkish Market, that had up to four cases, each nesting perfectly within each other and keeping the inner watch safe from damage. Key-wind/Key-set Movements The very first pocket watches up until the third quarter of the 19th century had key-wind and key-set movements. A watch key was necessary to wind the watch and to set the time. This was usually done by opening the case back and putting the key over the winding-arbor (which was set over the watch’s winding-wheel, to wind the mainspring) or by putting the key onto the setting-arbor, which was connected with the minute-wheel and turned the hands. Some watches of this period had the setting-arbor at the front of the watch, so that removing the crystal and bezel was necessary to set the time. This watch includes a reproduction of the correct size key, it is not the original. Verge Fusee Escapement Used in antique spring-powered mechanical watches and clocks, a fusee is a cone-shaped pulley with a helical groove around it, wound with a cord or chain which is attached to the mainspring barrel. Fusees were used from the 15th century to the early 20th century to improve timekeeping by equalizing the uneven pull of the mainspring as it ran down. The mainspring is coiled around a stationary axle (arbor), inside a cylindrical box, the barrel. The force of the spring turns the barrel. Repoussé or Repoussage Repousse is a metalworking technique in which a malleable metal is ornamented or shaped by hammering from the reverse side to create a design in low relief. VERY GOOD, RARE ANTIQUE ENGLISH SILVER CONSULAR CASED VERGE FUSEE POCKET WATCH LONDON c1859. Antique, early Victorian gentleman’s sterling silver, consular cased, verge fusee Pocket Watch by Debois & Wheeler of London. The firm of Desbois & Wheeler were well respected makers of good quality watches. The English made, sterling silver case is in good condition. It has full English hallmarks for sterling silver. The case maker’s mark “EH”, the Lion Passant sterling silver mark, the Leopard’s Head London town mark and the date letter “d” for 1859/60. The rear of the case with engine turned engraving and a central cartouche that is free of initials. He white enamel dial is in very good condition for it’s age, only some little nibbles and some very short hairlines on the edge. It has the hours in Roman numerals. The good quality verge movement is signed “Desbois & Wheeler, London” and has the serial number 1631. The watch measures 49mm in diameter (across the case, excluding the winding crown). Up for sale is an interesting sterling silver repousse English verge fusee pocketwatch with a fancy painted dial. The outer case is about 47mm in diameter. The repousse scene shows some wear. The porcelain dial has a wonderful painted scene. The dial has a few hairlines and a small chip on the number 25. The painted section is fine. The glass crystal is not high domed like it should be, and the cannon pinion has been shortened to accommodate the lower crystal. The movement is signed Wm Crayton London. The fusee movement runs for a while, and then stops. Due to the nature of verge movements, I cannot guarantee the accuracy of the watch or that the movement will run continuously.
