Elgin Grade 149 Hunting Cased Railroad Approved Pocket Watch. 21 jewels Adjusted for Temperature and Positions. Gold Filled 14k Case Marked Criterion 14k. Case shows light even wear (No Brassing) see pictures. Case hinges are good with front cover standing at 45 degrees when opened. Movement runs strong & smoothly, tested for 36 hours ran very well for first 24 hours then accuracy fell off ending about 2 minutes slow. I have not serviced the watch. All winding, setting functions work correctly. Dates to 1896 Serial Number. This is a nice vintage Jaeger LeCoultre Swiss Staybrite steel cased pocket watch with day & date. It is in working condition but I don’t know how accurate it keeps time. It is still able to be wound and is not overwound. It does have some condition issues to the face as well as to the glass that overs the face which is broken and needs to be replaced. The back of the casing us unmarked on the exterior but the interior of it is marked Staybrite Fab Suisse and numbered 60408. It isn’t pictured but there are various incised marks on that part of the case from when it was serviced. The workings of the clock are marked Swiss Jaeger LeCoultre and numbered 122961. Beautiful British verge pocket watch by Nicholas Prevost. The outer case diameter is 57mm, inner case is 50mm. Weight is hefty 141 grams. The watch is signed by N. Nicholas Prevost , recorded by Baillie, circa 1710. The watch is a good example of British watchmaking of late XVII / early XVIII. Movement features tulip pillars and cock with D-shaped foot – these details appeared about 1690s and disappeared to 1710. The engraving also makes think about 1700. The case hasn’t any hallmarks, what isn’t surprising for such an early watch. Besides inner case is later polished.. Condition The watch appears to be in good condition. Movement is nice and clean, appeared to be in good running condition and works in every position. Champleve silver dial seems to be free from defects. Case is in good condition with some period wear. Vintage 1920s Waltham USA Dennison Moon Cased Gold Plated Full Hunter Pocket Watch. A lovely vintage full hunter gold plated Waltham pocket watch in working order and keeping good time. The case is stamped’Moon’ (please see more information about this below). The gold plated case is in good condition with faint marks in places, the gold has worn on the loop where a pocket watch chain attaches. When the winder is depressed you can open the full hunter door, the hinge is worn on one part so whilst the door is attached and opens fine (please view photo 12) it should be handled with care. The crystal, ceramic face and hands are all in excellent condition with no visible chips or cracks. It measures approx 50.20mm diameter by 13.20mm thick and weighs approx 112 grammes. Gold-filled or rolled gold plate is a composite material where sheets of gold are bonded by heat and pressure to a core of base metal such as nickel or brass. The thickness of the gold determines how long the item will last in normal use before the gold wears through and the base metal shows. Gold filled should be thicker and constitute at least 1/20th of the weight of the metal in the entire article, rolled gold plate must constitute at least 1/40th of the weight of the metal in the entire article. The layer of gold in gold filled or rolled gold plate items is much thicker than electroplated gold, and therefore longer wearing. Because this material is not solid gold it cannot be hallmarked. Initially an explanation of the process was engraved inside of Dennison cases, together with the expected lifetime of the gold plate in years, which was the length of time under normal wear that the gold covering was expected to last before it wore through and the base metal showed. On later cases this information was indicated only by one of three words. Sun with inside and outside layers of 14 carat gold, guaranteed for to wear for 25 years. Moon with inside and outside layers of 10 carat gold, guaranteed to wear for 20 years. Star the layer on the outside of the case 9 carat gold, guaranteed to wear for 10 years. The inside of the Star case, which of course was subject to less wear, was electroplated with a thin layer of gold for further economy. Dennison gold filled watch cases are very good quality and are often found in nearly new condition today. If the gold plate has not worn through, then the case looks just like a gold case, because of course you only see the surface which is gold, but the prices are much more reasonable than for a solid gold case. Why would someone pay more for a solid gold case when you can’t see the difference? Silver pair cased verge pocket watch – London, c1730. Silver pair cases, 57.5 mm. MOVEMENT : Gilt verge movement, with nicely engraved and pierced winged balance cock and plate. Large silver regulator disk and four Egyptian pillars. All in good original condition and running well. DIAL : Silver champleve dial in very good condition. Later hands, the hour repaired at the base. INNER CASE : Silver, makers mark B, but no hallmarks. In good condition, though the stem and bow are later so have been reattached. The hinge is a little worn so the bezel doesnt snap shut tightly. The high dome bulls eye crystal is scratched and worn, but no chips. OUTER CASE : Silver pair case, again with no hallmarks. Nice large square hinge. The hinge, catch button and catch are fine and the case closes correctly. There are a few light bruises to the back, and an old repair at the neck (only visible from the inside), but generally in quite good condition.
