They were the first to gain independence from European watch providers in the New World. But more than that, they sought to provide a more accurate watch at a affordable price to the American Citizen. After beginning activity in Boston by the Boston Watch Co. 1853 1859, In January 1859, the Waltham Improvement Co. And the Appleton, Tracy & Co. Merged to form the American Watch Company. In 1860, as Lincoln was elected president and the country was in Civil War, the American Watch Co. Was faced with serious problems. The next year, business came to a standstill. There seemed to be little hope of finding a market for watches, and bankruptcy again seemed close at hand. At this point it was decided to cut expenditures to the lowest possible figure and keep the factory in operation. American horology owes much to members of the Waltham Watch group such as Bacon, Church, Dennison, Fogg, Howard, Marsh, Webster, and Woerd, who contributed much to its development and success. In early 1861, the name J. Watson appeared on model 1857 first run: nos. 23,601 to 24,300 total production 1200. The next model 1857 was the R. Robbins of which 2800 were made. The William Ellery marked: Em Ellery, (model 1857) was then introduced with the first serial number of 46,201. It was key wind and key set and has 7 to 15 jewels. A size 10 womens watch was made in July of 1861 with the first serial numbers of 44,201. It was marked Appleton, Tracy & Co gold balance, key wind and key set, ¾ plate, 13 to 15 jewels. Some were marked P. Bartlett and a 15 jewel was marked Appleton, Tracy & Co. A special model, 10 size, serial numbers of 45,801 to 46,200, is extremely rare. By 1857, 35,000,000 watches were produced, and the factories closed forever. The example presented in this listing is extremely rare. This is the original 18k Gold Case! Rare WALTHAM Pocket / Wrist Watch Size 00 Movement RUNNING 20Yrs Star GF Case. Watch was working when I acquired it but stem would not stay in. Had jeweler clean, adjust and put a new 2 pc crown in watch. Jeweler indicated that watch was from the Early 1900′s American Waltham Company in a Star Watch Case Co. 20 year Gold Filled Case serial number 5476016 this puts the watch case pre 1924 “Star” Pre-1924 Gold-Filled, guaranteed for 20 years as late as November 1906. Movement is 15 Jewel American Waltham Watch Co. Serial Number 14503176 This serial number according to chart found showing production dates puts the watch being manufactured between 1905 to 1906. There are some other dates and numbers hand etched inside case lid likely from serving? M-10-43 and some AXXXXXX numbers. Watch face is in good condition for age. Under Lupe magnification there is what appears to be a small hairline crack on face running from second hand to between VIII and IX. Watch Band is Vintage Lenox (hallmark is Lenox inside a triangle) Ladies Black Cord butterfly clasp Watch Band. I do not believe the band to be original and may have been added in possibly the 40′s. Watch band fittings are marked Lenox B. Overall watch is in very nice working condition for its age. I had a very minimal restoration (light cleaning and 2 pc stem) done and have left the patina in the condition I found it. I have the e-bay unpaid item assistant turned on and set to automatically open an unpaid item case after 3 days. If you feel that you need longer to pay for an item please let me know. For parts or repair this non-running American Waltham does have a neat looking dial. The crystal is showing scratching from use and age. The dial measures about 1 1/2 inches in diameter. The dial does have a few hairline cracks. The movement has the number 12310741. The case does have a few small dings. The movement is a little loose in the case.
