During World War II, Hamilton produced a variety of time pieces to support the war effort. In fact, all of Hamilton’s production was dedicated to defense purposes. However, they did still produce some wrist watches using excess movements produced in the 1920′s. One of the war-related watches was a pocket watch with a central sweep second hand. The movement was based on the 21 jewel, 16 size 992B movement. However, an extra jewel was added to support the second hand pinion, so the movement got 22 jewels and was called the 4992B. The 4992B is known as a “Navigator’s Watch” as it was used by aviators to aid in navigation by the US Navy during the war. You’ll often see 4992B’s in a case or a box that was intended to isolate it and protect it from shocks or accidental damage. If you look closely at the dial, you’ll see that it’s a 24 hour dial so it takes a full day for the hour hand to make a full rotation. 12:00 noon on a 24 hour dial looks like 6:00 on a 12-hour dial. The minute hand still makes it around the dial in one hour, so the ratio of the minute hand to the hour hand is modified using a different minute wheel and hour wheel ratio. GOOD QUALITY, 18CT SOLID GOLD, AMERICAN WALTHAM RIVERSIDE HUNTER CASED POCKET WATCH. A very good quality, antique 18C. T Solid Gold American Waltham Pocket Watch with a high grade 19 Jewel Riverside movement. This is an excellent example, in very good condition and very good working order. The 18 carat solid gold case is in excellent condition. The English made case hallmarked with the maker’s mark “ALD” for Aaron Lufkin Dennison, “18″ and “crown” for 18. Carat gold, the Birmingham town mark and date letter “c” for 1902/03. The case has very crisp, engine turned engraving, showing virtually know signs of wear, with a central cartouche that is free of initials. An extremely fine example. The white enamel dial is in excellent condition, it has the hours in Roman numerals and a sub seconds dial at six o’clock. It is signed by the maker “Waltham”. The very good quality, high grade, 19 Jewels, Waltham Riverside movement is in excellent working order. It is signed by the maker AWWCo. Waltham, Mass” and also “Riverside” alongside “19 Jewels, Adjusted. It has a lovely damaskeened finish. All signs of a very good watch. Verge Fusee champleve dial Silver Pair Cased Pocket Watch. This is a lovely example of an early champleve dial pocket watch. It was made I’m between 1690 and 1700 and is all original and in working order. The case is made from silver and stamped with the silversmith “LD” we don’t know who that was as the silver records office burned down many years ago and all the records went with it. But the case its self is a pair case. Overall they are in good condition. This is a champleve dial and is totally original it has got the watchmakers name on the front (rodet) and where it was made (London). All the original wax is still in place and the dial has not been over rubbed. The watch still has its original hand as well which are made from pierced blue steel. This is an exceptional movement that is of the finest quality. It has Egyptian pillars and a verge escarpment. The parts are all original in the movement and the balance cock is lovely. The watch has recently been serviced and keeps fantastic time overall this is a lovely watch. The watch will come with a winding key. Quarter Repeater The quarter repeater strikes the number of hours, and then the number of quarter hours since the last hour. The mechanism uses 2 chimes of different tones. The low tone usually signals the hours, and the high tone the quarter hours. As an example, if the time is 2:45, the quarter repeater sounds 2 low tones and after a short pause 3 high ones: “dong, dong, ding, ding, ding”. Alternatively, some use a pair of tones to distinguish the quarter hours: “dong, dong, ding-dong, ding-dong, ding-dong”. Key-wind/Key-set Movements The very first pocket watches up until the third quarter of the 19th century had key-wind and key-set movements. A watch key was necessary to wind the watch and to set the time. This was usually done by opening the case back and putting the key over the winding-arbor (which was set over the watch’s winding-wheel, to wind the mainspring) or by putting the key onto the setting-arbor, which was connected with the minute-wheel and turned the hands. Some watches of this period had the setting-arbor at the front of the watch, so that removing the crystal and bezel was necessary to set the time. Hamilton 992b in stainless hamilton case. This is a near mint Hamilton 992b in a stainless steel hamilton case. It is the last stainless steel that I had in my collection. The movement has a gold center wheel and runs with full motion. The case is in very clean condition with a new glass crystal. It is to the best of my knowledge 100 percent original except for the glass crystal. It has two very small hairline cracks in original dia. You have to look close to see them.
