About 48 mm diameter across the outer case shagreen covered & is in superb condition only damage to cover is at the pip to open the case all the pins are in place i thin the outer case is not solid gold though it is a gold color the inner case is solid gold 18k or better by my reckoning topped off by its original ribbed bow & twisty pendant 7 knuckles on the hinge for the front bezel clear glass bull’s eye crystal excellent deep blued steel beetle & poker hands classic english enamel dial with arabic 5 minute markers & roman numerals the dial is in very nice condition catch to swing out movement sticks out through the front of the dial at the bottom of the 6 sparkling fire gilt movement is signed matt hill london # 181 i have matt listed in my bailles from 1744 till 1790 & feel confident this is one of his earlier pieces due to several clues…. Such as the catch latch sticking out from the front & the worm wheel setup under the mainspring barrel lovely hand pierced & engraved balance cock with a floral edge & a bird of paradise? This is a very cool and hard to find “Space age” Novelty pocket watch, its similar to the Dan Dare Novelty watch but this version which I think is called either “From outer Space” or “Lost in Space” is really difficult to find in good original working condition like this. It has turned up in a local estate and has sat in an old draw within its original stand for possibly the last 5 decades if not longer, the overall condition is just remarkable and its clearly been well looked after and away from sun light, I do not know what they sell for and its the first we have found with the original Cream painted stand / clock conversion case and its just such a great example, because they are very cheaply made watches and designed to only last a few months an example in this original state is really uncommon. The watch winds very well and hand sets, its also working when wound, I had my watchmaker look at the watch and he said it still retains much of the original finish and has clearly seen little use. The timekeeping was not tested but he suggested that its doing well as set. The case is the classic watch stand 2 part case in its original cream paint, it has a couple very minor chips but its all original which is rather cool looking. The movement is the classic Ingersol type “Made in England” & its working well at present with both the head nod of the astronaut and the revolving star. Just a super looking watch with a great original dial and hands, overall a very nice vintage silver pocket watch. Size: approx 4.8 cm across the watch case. Even when new, these watches were not exact time keepers; and now that the watch is at least over 200 years old, we do not guarantee that this watch will keep time. Chatelaine Chatelaine refers to the ornamental clasp worn at a waist, attached to a belt or girdle, with a hook-plate from which the watch is suspended. Key-wind/Key-set Movements The very first pocket watches up until the third quarter of the 19th century had key-wind and key-set movements. A watch key was necessary to wind the watch and to set the time. This was usually done by opening the case back and putting the key over the winding-arbor (which was set over the watch’s winding-wheel, to wind the mainspring) or by putting the key onto the setting-arbor, which was connected with the minute-wheel and turned the hands. Some watches of this period had the setting-arbor at the front of the watch, so that removing the crystal and bezel was necessary to set the time. Verge Fusee Escapement Used in antique spring-powered mechanical watches and clocks, a fusee is a cone-shaped pulley with a helical groove around it, wound with a cord or chain which is attached to the mainspring barrel. Fusees were used from the 15th century to the early 20th century to improve timekeeping by equalizing the uneven pull of the mainspring as it ran down. The mainspring is coiled around a stationary axle (arbor), inside a cylindrical box, the barrel. The force of the spring turns the barrel. Full Plate A plate (or disc) that covers the works and supports the wheels pivots. There is a top plate, a bottom plate, half, and 3/4 plate. The top plate has the balance resting on it. Repoussé or Repoussage Repousse is a metalworking technique in which a malleable metal is ornamented or shaped by hammering from the reverse side to create a design in low relief.
