Antique 1908 Burlington Special Illinois Size 16 Pocket Watch in Philadelphia GF 20 Year Case. We are pleased to offer for sale this hard to find antique size 16 Burlington Special pocket watch made by the Illinois Watch Co. It is model 5, grade 174 , 19 jewels, serial number 2051917 with a lever movement setting and was made about 1908. The case is 20 year gold-filled and was made by the Philadelphia Watch Case Co. With a serial number of 8322382 and features a shield design on the back cover. The Burlington Watch Co. Most of the Burlington watches were made by The Illinois Watch Company. This watch is in good running condition and shows only minor wear. The dial with Arabic Numerals and minute, hour and second hands are in good condition as is the crystal glass with slight wear. There is a tiny crack in the dial where the lever is pulled out for setting the watch. There are some minor scratches on the case. See my other listings. For more great items! Here is your chance to acquire a rare precision watch for civil or military use, s pecially designed and manufactured for exploration and surveying in hostile climes. This is a Royal Geographical Society pattern explorers watch of the b est quality. It retains the original three tier mahogany box with the original numbered plaque. The diameter of the watch is 57 mm and the box 12.7 x 9.5 x 6 cms. With its original key, the box is in excellent condition with no marks or bruising and appears to have had little use. The silver case is in its original state as found and has not been shined up. Someone has nibbled at the edge with a knife (see picture) but this could be polished out. The movement runs well and keeps time but may need cleaning and adjustment. Such watches were employed during the various expeditions and explorations at the time of the expansion of the British Empire in the nineteenth century. This is a late example with a silver case bearing the hallmarks for 1913-14. A number were produced from around during the last quarter of the nineteenth century towards the verge of WW1 both in silver and (extremely rarely) in gold and with different technical specifications depending on their particular requirements. The case is of heavy gauge as they always are, but unusually the movement here is of the highest grade which is not always the case. They were designed with a special dust proof case in which the milled back and bezel are screwed on, both with leather gaskets to seal off dust or moisture. In addition, the winding crown was covered with a screwed on cap connected with a safety chain. In these’explorers’ watches there was never any provision for setting the hands after the case was sealed as this would enable ingress of water, dirt etc. Hence the high precision free sprung movement which would have been adjusted to time and then sealed. It must have been assumed that the timekeeping would have a perfectly accurate rate for long periods. The fine enamel dial is surmounted by bold blued steel hands with sunken subsidiaries for seconds and state of wind (or’Up and Down’) There is an almost invisible hairline crack at 6 and a small chip at the very edge, however this is not visible when the bezel is screwed down. The’half plate’ movement was probably supplied by Usher & Cole (movement maker stamped JP for Joseph Prest) and has a reverse fusee with keyless winding. The detached lever escapement is fully jewelled with cap jewels and a diamond endstone. Also a compensation balance fitted with a free sprung balance spring with a single overcoil. Although the highest precision watches of the period had a chronometer detent escapement, these were more for observatory use than for exploration. So they would have been considered less robust in such watches used for exploration which could survive being jarred or jolted. Wathier Special Railway Chronometer. 18 size 17 jewel hunting case lever-set “Wathier Special Railway Chronometer” pocket watch. A rare and interesting private label watch with movement marked “Wathier Special Railway Chronometer, Chicago” and with double-sunk enamel dial marked Wathier’s Chronometer, Chicago. Movement has a standard lever escapement and is very attractive with a terrific 2-tone gold and nickel damaskeen finish and with gold-flashed screws and regulator assembly. Watch is housed in a gold-filled hunting case with a small lakeside home scene at its center rear. Movement serial number is 439143. Running and a beautiful movement with excellent 2-tone color and luster. Some movement screws have gilt loss or are non-gilt replacements. Center jewel setting appears to have been rotated 90 degrees as the brass setting has two extra witness marks visible from jewel setting screws. Dial faces up beautifully but has some scattered faint to very faint hairlines, a few minuscule edge nicks under the case bezel, and a minuscule surface nick near the edge outside the 52 minute position. Case shows moderate even wear with reduced engraving detail, a small dent to its band at 12 O’clock, some scattered dings, and bezel is brass colored with no gold finish remaining. Illinois 60 hour Bunn Special 23 Jewel, 14kt Gold Filled Case. Thanks for looking at a most incredible watch American made in Springfield Illinois. This model was named after the the president of the company Jacob Bunn, a friend of President Abe Lincoln, Jacob Bunn had his main office in Chicago, reorganize Railroads help them raise financing. And was fanatical about new technology about accuracy. When the Bunn Special came out in the turn of the century it was a epitome of American watch making renowned around the world. This watch is over 92 years old serial number 5067542, circa 1928, type 3, model 14 16 size, 23 ruby jewels set with gold bushings, gold center wheel, 60 hours, adjusted to six wearing positions, and temperature. Stem winding and set with the lever after turning off crystal and bezel. Many times I have just watch this run in a glass dome wondering how something so beautifully and meticulously manufactured, could be made without CNC machines or modern day computers. The Two tone Especially made Bunn case has two plates of 14kt solid gold with a brass interior, think of it as an Oreo cookie. The inner brass gives it strength and keeps the price down but has the look of solid gold.
