About 48 mm diameter across the outer case shagreen covered & is in superb condition only damage to cover is at the pip to open the case all the pins are in place i thin the outer case is not solid gold though it is a gold color the inner case is solid gold 18k or better by my reckoning topped off by its original ribbed bow & twisty pendant 7 knuckles on the hinge for the front bezel clear glass bull’s eye crystal excellent deep blued steel beetle & poker hands classic english enamel dial with arabic 5 minute markers & roman numerals the dial is in very nice condition catch to swing out movement sticks out through the front of the dial at the bottom of the 6 sparkling fire gilt movement is signed matt hill london # 181 i have matt listed in my bailles from 1744 till 1790 & feel confident this is one of his earlier pieces due to several clues…. Such as the catch latch sticking out from the front & the worm wheel setup under the mainspring barrel lovely hand pierced & engraved balance cock with a floral edge & a bird of paradise? At the neck key set from the front / key wind from the rear the watch is in good running order running the full length of the chain but not checked for timekeeping considering the age of this watch it has been amazingly well cared for over the centuries & remains in fantastic overall condition quality throughout a beautiful pair cased london verge for the enthusiast to enjoy! Most of the gold pins are in place, small pieces as shown missing round front bezel. Shagreen is a form of sharkskin it was used to cover expensive watches. The size of the case with the watch size is 41 m. Case with the watch is Silver hallmarked London for 1771. DIAL white enamel is nice condition. The glass is very high nose mineral and clean and clear. The fire gilt movement look just like the day it left the work shop. The watch runs Time keeping Aprox + or – 2/3 minuets per hour, mask engraved and scroll pierced engraved broad balance cock, square pillars. Engraved on the back plate with the makers name. The watch will come with a key. Just great to have such an amazing and interesting watch that is as good as this one, and it just has every thing one could want on a fine verge watch, very hard to find a watch in this condition with all that it has going for it. LARGE SHAGREEN & SILVER PAIR CASE FRENCH VERGE FUSEE (WITH MOCK PENDULUM) POCKET WATCH. A 18th century Shagreen and Silver pair cased verge fusee pocket watch. The outer Shagreen case with pin-work detail is finely decorated with a large Silver Fleur de lis French Coat of arms, the inner plain polished silver case (housing the movement) has European silver markings including the initials ALI. It has a champleve dial with Arabic numerals, the dial centre section depicts two birds and it has beetle & Poker hands. A very unusual movement with old style square pillars. A filigree cock-foot frame incorporating a Silver Tompion style disc regulator and a F. Rench bridge type silver balance cock. Engraved with an Angel figure. The cock is open at the bottom to reveal a mock pendulum which swings with the motion of the balance wheel. Below are the words “De Tyd”. It has a chain driven fusee and a verge escapement. The dial is signed Edward Neweren, London, disregarding the place name this pocket watch is most likely to be of French/European origin rather than English home grown. The outer case measures a large 55mm (approx 2) in diameter, the combined weight including movement is 102 grammes. Condition : The outer shagreen case is in very good condition without any splits or cracks, each and every one of the 26 pinwork are all intact. The inner silver case is also in good condition without any dents or dings. The movement is good strong running order, running the full length of the fusee chain without stopping and keeping to good time for a verge movement of this age. Both case covers open and close correctly with good strong hinges and both case cover latches work correctly. Its imperishable shagreen case and the accurate verge movement is a testament to the skills of its 18th century European makers and irrefutable. This is a very rare enamel gilt and shagreen (shark skin) outer case for a late 17th or early 18th century verge pocket watch.
