20k gold Pair case Repousse verge pocket watch Brown London 1725. Outstanding pair-cased Dutch rococo Verge fusee pocket watch in exquisite repoussé gold case of French origin circa 1725-30, “Minerva shielding Telemachus from the Arrow of Cupid”. The watch bears the signature “Brown London” , in my opinion; these are a falsifying statement. In the 18th century, English clocks were the most popular of their time. For this reason it was common among European watchmakers to provide their watches with an English signature. Upon closer inspection of the watch you may come to the conclusion it can only be the work of a Dutch master. Compering with Watches by Paul Bramer or Cornelius Uyterweer, then show the typical, charming playful movement pillars, the two-sided screwing of the escapement bridge. Another feature is the typical Dutch dial and the curving minute hand. The richly decorated pair cases with large external hinge are made of 20k gold. Due to its excellent, outstanding quality may be the work of one the greatest masters of the time. Made in repoussé technique, the outer case is a lush, mythological scene. Minerva protecting the sleeping Telemachus against the love arrows of Cupid. The smooth inner case is also made of 20kt gold and shows four hallmarks of the master goldsmith. In addition to the French master brand L R under a crown, the French lily, the city of Lyon Brand (Flower) and the Lion brand that stands for the purity of the gold of 840/1000. Both cases are found in nearly unworn condition , the textile between the two cases are still the original intermediate sheet of silk. Very well-preserved dial , enamelled, with Roman and Arabic hour minute. Original Poker & Beetle iron hands. The enamel dial has radial Roman hours and Arabic minutes. The dial is very well preserved. Full plate movemen t, keywind, applied floral decorations, firegilt, signed, chain/fusee, fluted pillars with foliate scrolls, three-arm brass balance, engraved and pierced silver balance bridge with flower and shell decoration. Very nice big and thick Dutch verge fusee watch. The dial and movement are signed by Jan van Ceulen Le Jeune – Hagae. The watch is very nice. It features repousse silver outer case in truly remarkable, hard to find condition, with most delicate details preserved. The silver champleve dial is made in British style, without typical Dutch style wavy minute circle. The cock with D-shaped leg has symmetrical design and is decorated with fairy birds. It’s very finely made with attention to small details. Movement also feature nice openwork tulip pillars. Jean (Jan, John) van Ceulen Le Jeune is member of famous Dutch clockmaking dynasty. His watch from 1700 is described in Britten’s classical book p. Baillie book also mentions watches by van Ceulen Le Jeune in Ashmolean collection and watch with enamels of Huaud brothers. Condition Condition is quite nice. Dial is in good condition with few minor defects. Movement is running in every position though I don’t guarantee time keeping. The silver case appears to be in good condition. Outer case diameter is 57mm, height is 61mm, thickness is 34mm. Very nice watch in good collector condition. Video will open in a new window. Balance is ok, chain is here but not working, looks gummy and needs cleaning and oiling. Inner case winding hole is off the center (picture #5) and I think that movement is not original to cases but it is only my opinion. Hinges has to be adjusted to work properly. Vintage 1771 George III Tarts of London Silver Repousse Pair Cased Pocket Watch in working order with Mahogany storage clock case and keys. A stunning timepiece with lovely enamel dial displaying a town river scene, it is made by Tarts of London and is stamped with the serial number 12100 The silver casings have faint hallmarks and the date mark looks to be 1771 which sits well with its serial number The watch case has a lovely patina to it with a couple of very minor dents, the repousse case is stunning with a romantic scene portrayed on its rear. The watch comes with 2 keys and winds and works perfectly, the winding key is a little loose but does the job. The enamel is a little bit damaged at the bottom of the dial from opening to get to the movement, could easily be repaired by building up enamel paint or left as is. Watch measures approx 4cm in diameter by 3cm deep, outer case measures approx 5cm in diameter The Wooden Clock case measures approx 20cm high by 9.5cm wide by 4.5cm deep and has been made at a later date but is still extremely old.
