This is a Top Grade Minute Repeater Chronograph Pocket Watch from Humber Ramuz Co. Dating to approximately 1890s. The movement is tremendous with JEWELS TO HAMMERS and 30J+ overall along with wolf teeth winding and movement top-side chronograph mechanism. But this tremendous movement is not the only awesome aspect of this pocket watch, the case is so stunning that it can certainly be considered to be one-of-a-kind. On the front cover there is a high relief sculpture of a griffon with all of its fangs, claws and wings whereby it is holding a large piece of diamond emitting rays. This diamond is old European cut and approximately 0.45ct. The base finish of the case itself is a sand-blasted look and the Humber Ramuz label is stamped 3 times including the wording medaille dor exp. Paris 1889 marking a great achievement of the brand. Condition-wise the movement was serviced by a great watchmaker just over a year ago and has been sitting in the safe. It cant be overlooked to have a highly capable watchmaker to service such a treasure the correct way. Cosmetically the dial has many hairlines cracks from 12 oclock position. There are a few hard-to-notice shallow dents here and there on the case. The chime and tone of the repeating is loud, clear, and beautiful sounding. Diameter is 53.5mm, total weight is 133.2 grams. Gilt brass cases, 79 mm. Verge, quarter repeating movement. A Swiss quarter repeater, in a very large and unusual oval hunter case. MOVEMENT : Gilded movement with small silver regulator disk, and beautifully pierced and engraved balance bridge with polished steel coquerette. All in good condition. Running well and repeating correctly, striking on two blued steel gongs. DIAL : White enamel dial, in quite good condition. One hairline running through the centre from 3 to 9, chips around the winding aperture and a few scratches. Blued steel Breguet type hands. CASE : A very large, oval, gilt brass half hunter case. The movement is accessed by an inner cover to the back, so it is wound (and hands set) through two small holes in the crystal. However the crystal is acrylic and the front of the inner case would originally of opened to access, so this a later modification. Originally the dial would have had an undrilled mineral crystal and the inner front cover would have lifted to access the dial for winding and setting. Quarter Hour Repeater The quarter repeater strikes the number of hours, and then the number of quarter hours since the last hour. The mechanism uses 2 chimes of different tones. The low tone usually signals the hours, and the high tone the quarter hours. As an example, if the time is 2:45, the quarter repeater sounds 2 low tones and after a short pause 3 high ones: “dong, dong, ding, ding, ding”. Alternatively, some use a pair of tones to distinguish the quarter hours: “dong, dong, ding-dong, ding-dong, ding-dong”. Key-wind/Key-set Movements The very first pocket watches up until the third quarter of the 19th century had key-wind and key-set movements. A watch key was necessary to wind the watch and to set the time. This was usually done by opening the case back and putting the key over the winding-arbor (which was set over the watch’s winding-wheel, to wind the mainspring) or by putting the key onto the setting-arbor, which was connected with the minute-wheel and turned the hands. Some watches of this period had the setting-arbor at the front of the watch, so that removing the crystal and bezel was necessary to set the time. This watch includes a reproduction of the correct size key, it is not the original. Verge Fusee Escapement Used in antique spring-powered mechanical watches and clocks, a fusee is a cone-shaped pulley with a helical groove around it, wound with a cord or chain which is attached to the mainspring barrel. Fusees were used from the 15th century to the early 20th century to improve timekeeping by equalizing the uneven pull of the mainspring as it ran down. The mainspring is coiled around a stationary axle (arbor), inside a cylindrical box, the barrel. The force of the spring turns the barrel. Pair Case Higher end early verge fusee watches were often in a pair case. Pair case refers to when a pocket watch is placed within another case (nesting), therefore two cases. The outter protective case is often very decorative. There are also watches, such as those made for the Turkish Market, that had up to four cases, each nesting perfectly within each other and keeping the inner watch safe from damage. Repoussé or Repoussage Repousse is a metalworking technique in which a malleable metal is ornamented or shaped by hammering from the reverse side to create a design in low relief.
