Up for sale, is a near mint and very rare French gilt verge fusee antique enamel back scene, and white gem set case pocket watch, circa 1790. Made by an eminent French watchmaker. The watch has just been cleaned and serviced and the movement is in perfect working condition. It runs to the end of the chain very smoothly and keeps very good time. It is a rare and lovely gilt case pocket watch with an original unrestored and 100% genuine enamel mint scene on the back side. The case has white set gems, both in the front bezel and to the back side. The watch is 45 mm wide, and weighs 81 gr’. It is late 18. Century French verge, in a gilt, and enamel consular case. The back of the case is decorated in lovely enamel colours depicting a country scene of two beautiful figures in the woods. Full plate fire gilt fusee movement. Finely pierced and engraved cock. Plain three arm gilt balance wheel with blue steel spiral hairspring. Signed white enamel dial with Roman numerals for the hours and Arabic numerals for the minutes. BEAUTIFUL shaped gilt ornamented hands. I would think that the minute hand is not original and has been replaced. The dial is in very good condition except for a professionally restored small part around the key winding aperture. The dial is also signed : Berthoud , Paris. Was French watch maker who came from a very large French family of watchmakers which one of them is the very famous watchmaker Ferdidand Berthoud , who moved to Paris and became a watchmaker and a clockmaker to the king. I do not think that this specific watch was made by Ferdidand Berthoud but rather then one of his great members of his great watchmakers family.
