THIS IS A HIGHLY COLLECTIBLE, VERY RARE ANTIQUE AMERICAN MADE ELGIN POCKET WATCH , SO DON’T LET IT PASS YOU BY! WATCHES ARRIVING IN NOT WORKING CONDITION WILL BE REPAIRED AND SENT BACK TO YOU. A pre-owned watch that has been worn, yet is in perfect condition. Accompanied by the factory box(es), tags and documentation. No alterations from factory-delivered condition. No bracelet resizing or marks of any kind. A pre-owned watch that is in very nearly perfect condition. Signs of wear are visible with a low powered loupe. May be a watch that is in NIB condition but not accompanied by the factory box(es) or documentation. Working perfectly, keeping excellent time, needs nothing. Showing very light signs of wear. Faint scratches on the case, bezel, bracelet or buckle are visible to the naked eye. Completely original in every way. Strap shows light use – may be bent or lightly creased, but not stained. Bracelet may be resized. The watch is working perfectly, keeping very good time and needs nothing. Evidence of use is visible to the unaided eye. Scratches are light, but more numerous than “near mint”. If the watch has been restored, all original replacement parts have been used. Strap clearly used but no stains. No dents or dings are detectable, and the bracelet has little wear. Working perfectly, needs no repair or service. The watch shows what might be considered normal wear by a careful owner who wore the watch regularly. Scratches are evident, but no nicks or dings. May have replacement parts and/or a high quality redial. Running and keeping good time, though may need minor regulation. A sound, attractive presentation overall. Nothing fundamentally wrong with the watch, though it has quite obviously been used. Running and wearable, but may gain or lose a few minutes over 24 hours. Case may show a few dings, nicks, or deep scratches. May have a redial that is not up to high standards. May not have all original parts. Well used, may require service and/or restoration to be useable. May be running erratically. Dial, case, and other major components may not be original, but no pieces are missing. This listing is for a large French circa 1890 silver full hunting cased pocket watch. The watch measures 2 inches or 50 mm in diameter. The watch comes complete with a very elaborate watch fob chain ending in a wax seal. This “chain” measures 5 inches long. Well as you can see from the photographs the case is something to see. The entire case is silver with niello work. (Niello and it’s use is detailed below the description for ths watch). The front cover has a “KZ” monogram amongst foliage. The most interesting back cover shows a royal coat of arms. I have not been able to identify this coat of arms. It displays a crowned helm or helmet atop a shield containing only one thing, a large battle ax. Above the helmet another smaller battle ax descends on the royal helmet. Is this a Royal coat of arms or that of a king slayer? . The shield is surrounded by ivy. The inner dust cover is engraved “REMONTOIR SPIRAL BREGUET”. The movement is stem wind and pin set. Meaning you wind the watch from the stem. You set the time by pushing the small button down that is next to the winding stem and then move the winder. The dial is white porcelain with black Roman numerals and black steel hands. The chain is all silver with the exception of a gold plaque on one of the pieces that contains a monogram. Another piece has another helm with a crown. At the bottom is a wax seal which is silver with a rim of gold. The condition is excellent, the dial is immaculate. The only damage is a crack in the covering crystal lens. The case is tight. The watch runs but can definitely use a cleaning and service. Please look at many photos for more on the look of this pocket watch. Black metallic alloy of sulfur with silver, copper, or lead that is used to fill designs that have been engraved on the surface of a metal (usually silver) object. Niello is made by fusing together silver, copper, and lead and then mixing the molten alloy with sulfur. The resulting black-coloured sulfides are powdered, and after the engraved metal, usually silver, has been moistened with a flux, some of the powder is spread on it and the metal strongly heated; the niello melts and runs into the engraved channels. The excess niello is then removed by scraping until the filled channels are clearly visible, and finally the surface is polished. The contrast of the black niello against the bright silver surface produces an attractive decorative effect. There is no reserve.
