Gilt pocket watch, pair cases, verge – John Leroux, London, c1780. Gilt pair cases, 55 mm. A fine quality verge, by an excellent London maker. MOVEMENT : Gilt verge movement, with engraved and pierced balance cock, diamond endstone, polished steel escape wheel, four round pillars, and blued screws. A lever on the side of the dial at 8 oclock stops and restarts the movement. Signed and numbered (3483). This movement is in excellent condition, and is running well. DIAL : Beautiful, signed white enamel dial with subsidiary seconds. Matching arrowhead gold hands. All in excellent condition. INNER CASE : Yellow metal, with no makers mark. In very good condition throughout. The high dome bulls eye crystal is also fine. OUTER CASE : Yellow metal, again with no makers mark. The hinge, catch and catch button are all fine and the bezel snaps shut correctly. John Leroux (1750 1805) is listed at 8 Charing Cross, London. He is known for his development of the lever movement following Thomas Mudges invention of the escapement. A Very nice Sterling Silver pair case verge fusee Pocket watch. With champlevé dial, made arround 1700 by the watchmaker. The beautiful movement with Egyptian pillars winds smoothly and runs with. A great motion in all positions, keeps reasonable time for a more than. 300 year old verge watch, the movement is signed J. The watch has a beautiful pierced Champlevé dial, also signed: J. The crystal glass is mint, nos. The Sterling silver cases are both in a reasonable condition considering there age. All covers closing nice and tight, both cases have many small dents, user marks. Across 55mm, including bow 67mm. Overall this is a very nice genuine verge watch made around 1700. In a fine working condition. Will be delivered with a fitting key, and an extra key set of 14 pcs. Small Antique Silver Pair Cased Verge Pocket Watch. Signed Geo Taylor London 1782. Needs some work, not presently working but complete. Complete with winding key. The gilt fusee movement with verge escapement is signed and numbered 8969. With square baluster pillars. Enamel convex dial with Arabic and Roman numerals and. Steel beetle and poker hands, enclosed under a bulls eye, domed glass. Both cases with the London hallmark for 1782 and maker’s mark IR. The outer case is 50mm in diameter. In the back of the outer case are four watchmakers repair labels the earliest one dated 1830 from Lerwick in the Shetland Islands. It is marked for a Mr A Smith, North Docks August 2 1830. A very nice older Verge pocket watch with Tortoise Shell pair case by William Flagg of London. The movement is very clean and running strongly with a healthy tick for the full length of the fusee chain. I have checked it over 24 hours and it is running about 50 minutes fast which I think is acceptible for being circa 200+ years old. As you can see the m/ment top hinge is broken (parts in box) so care has to be taken when opening the front cover. Could possibly be repaired or a new hinge block made. The outer case measures 53mm diameter approx and looks to be made from some kind of bronze. It has polished up very well and looks just like gold. Looking at the interior of the inner case shows that it has been gold gilded when new. Rare to have them available with a Tortoise Shell covering but as you can see it has had some repairs in the past. The white ceramic dial is in fair condition with Black Arabic numerals and gold hands. It has a high dome crystal glass which is clear and in good condition. The silver cases have matching hallmarks for London 1768/9, initials’WM’ (with crown above for William Matthews I believe). The cases are in good condition, as per photos. The hinges are tight and covers lock shut (flush finish all round when shut), the catch on the outer cover is in good working order. The outer case measures 52mm in diameter and the inner case 42mm in diameter. The convex enamel dial is in good condition, a couple of small very faint scratches. The bulls-eye glass crystal is in good condition. The hands are in good condition. The very decorative movement is signed’T Whiskin, London’ and numbered’20′. The movement is in good clean condition and working order (just ran for 24 hours from full wind and lost 20 minutes over that time). The movement runs in all positions apart from face down where it tends to stop on occasion. The movement includes square pillars, external mainspring tensioner and a decorative scroll finish to the movement latch spring. The movement is key wind and set, which work fine, key included. A large, early English verge with original champleve dial, in silver pair cases. MOVEMENT : Gilt verge movement, with finely engraved and pierced winged balance cock, showing birds and a mask at the neck. Four crested tulip pillars and silver regulator disk. In good condition and working. DIAL : Silver champleve dial, with gilt centre, in very good condition. Signed MEYER on the central disc, which also features a lion and unicorn under a crown and above a mask. INNER CASE : Silver, with no hallmarks but makers mark SB (crowned). In good condition, with just a few light bruises. The pendant has been reattached and with the bow are later replacements. The hinge and the high dome crystal are fine and the bezel snaps shut nicely. OUTER CASE : Silver pair case, with large square hinge (7 sleeves). Again with no hallmarks. The hinge, catch button and catch are fine and the case closes correctly. Some small bruises throughout. The Lion and Unicorn form the coat of arms of the British monarch (hence the crown) so this watch was probably made in London, around 1700. The makers mark on the inner case may be for Samuel Bowtell, whose marks (with and without the crown) have been seen on cases between about 1690 and 1710. VERY GOOD, RARE ANTIQUE ENGLISH SILVER CONSULAR CASED VERGE FUSEE POCKET WATCH LONDON c1859. Antique, early Victorian gentleman’s sterling silver, consular cased, verge fusee Pocket Watch by Debois & Wheeler of London. The firm of Desbois & Wheeler were well respected makers of good quality watches. The English made, sterling silver case is in good condition. It has full English hallmarks for sterling silver. The case maker’s mark “EH”, the Lion Passant sterling silver mark, the Leopard’s Head London town mark and the date letter “d” for 1859/60. The rear of the case with engine turned engraving and a central cartouche that is free of initials. He white enamel dial is in very good condition for it’s age, only some little nibbles and some very short hairlines on the edge. It has the hours in Roman numerals. The good quality verge movement is signed “Desbois & Wheeler, London” and has the serial number 1631. The watch measures 49mm in diameter (across the case, excluding the winding crown).
