Silver pocket watch, pair cases, verge – Henry Perry, London, c1700. Silver pair cases, 54mm. A fine, early London verge. MOVEMENT : Gilt verge movement, the engraved and pierced winged balance cock with wide D shaped foot. Four crested Egyptian pillars, silver regulator disk and blued screws. Running well, and in good condition throughout except for one of the pillars which is missing the top section. Fortunately this damage does not effect the running of the watch. Signed HEN PERRY, St. ANNs, SOHO, LONDON and numbered (319). DIAL : Silver champleve dial, in good condition. Signed PERRY, LONDON on the central disc. There is just one small hole on the left hand edge of this central disc. Good early 18th century steel beetle and poker hands. INNER CASE : Silver, with no hallmarks, but makers mark CW and movement serial number (319). In very good condition throughout. The hinge is fine and the bezel snaps shut correctly. The high dome crystal is fine. OUTER CASE : Silver pair case, with matching marks to the inner. The hinge, catch button and catch are fine and the case closes correctly. There is an old (and small) repair to the centre of the back which obscures the last digit of the serial number. Henry Parry is listed in Soho, London from 1691, and in the Clockmakers Company until 1721. The case maker is either Cuthbert Weaver or Clay Whitton. A large, early English verge with original champleve dial, in silver pair cases. MOVEMENT : Gilt verge movement, the engraved and pierced winged balance cock with wide D shaped foot.. Four crested tulip pillars and silver regulator disk. In good condition and working. DIAL : Silver champleve dial, in very good condition. Signed Mason, London on the central disc. Good early 18th century steel beetle and poker hands. INNER CASE : Silver, with no hallmarks. In reasonable condition, with a few light bruises. The pendant has been reattached and heavily reinforced around the neck. The bow is a replacement. There is a small hole in the back , near the winding aperture, where there would have originally been a small sliding cover to this aperture. The hinge and the high dome crystal are fine and the bezel closes but does not snap shut. OUTER CASE : Silver pair case. Again with no hallmarks. The hinge and catch are fine and the case closes correctly. The catch button has been filled with a gemstone diamond? This watch is probably by Charles Mason, recorded in London from 1687, apprenticed to Michael Bird. Silver pair cased verge pocket watch, mock pendulum – London, c1700. Silver pair cases, 57.25 mm. Mock pendulum verge movement. A large London verge, with fine and rare mock pendulum movement. MOVEMENT : Gilt verge movement, with engraved and pierced winged balance cock and plate, engraved regulator disk and four square pillars. The balance cock table is cut out to reveal a mock pendulum bob, which is attached to the 2 spoke balance wheel. In exceptionally good complete condition, with the the gilding still bright, and the movement running well. DIAL : Fine, original, silver champleve dial, signed in the centre Patrick, London. All in good condition with no excessive rubbing or wear. Nice original early 18th century blued steel hands. INNER CASE : Silver with makers mark rubbed. Damage around the neck, where the pendant has been replaced, and the inside strengthened. The hinge has been repaired on the bezel, and the rim of the case is slightly distorted. The high dome crystal has no chips or cracks, but surface scratches. However the bezel does snap shut securely. OUTER CASE : Silver , with no marks. Excellent condition throughout, with just some tiny bruises. The hinge, catch button and catch are fine, and the case snaps shut correctly. The inner case is slightly distorted so is not a perfect fit for the movement or outer case. It is possibly a replacement case, though the outer is probably original. Both are of the correct period for the movement. The inner case requires some repair and when strengthened and shaped correctly will provide a better fit for both movement and outer. A good early London verge with original champleve calendar dial, in silver pair cases. MOVEMENT : Gilt verge movement, with finely engraved and pierced winged balance cock, showing birds and a mask at the neck. Four tulip pillars and silver regulator disk. MARSH, LONDON and numbered (2538). The movement and calendar are both working. DIAL : Silver champleve dial, with calendar aperture, in very good condition. Nice original 18th century blued steel beetle and poker hands. INNER CASE : Silver, with no hallmarks. In quite good condition, though the pendant has been reattached and reinforced on the inside. However the pendant and bow appear to be original (of the correct simple style for c1700). There is a small section of the inner rim (about 10 mm) broken off the inner rim at 7 and a couple of old repairs. The hinge is worn, but complete. The high dome crystal is fine and the bezel snaps shut nicely. OUTER CASE : Silver pair case, with large square hinge (7 sleeves). Again with no hallmarks. The Lion and Unicorn form the coat of arms of the British monarch (hence the crown) so this watch was probably made in London, around 1700. The makers mark on the inner case may be for Samuel Bowtell, whose marks (with and without the crown) have been seen on cases between about 1690 and 1710.
