LARGE SILVER PAIR CASED VERGE FUSEE POCKET WATCH WITH CHAMPLEVE DIAL. A fine and rare early 18th century English key wound and set large and deep silver pair cased verge fusee pocket watch by eminent father & son clock and watch makers Joseph & Thomas Windmills. The deep fire gilt verge, chain driven fusee movement is signed Windmills London and serial numbered 3749 to match the inner case, It has pierced Egyptian pillars , a large finely pierced and engraved winged balance cock incorporating face mask, the balance cock having extra support feet to form a balance bridge and with a finely pierced and engraved broad cock foot, a polished flat steel three arm balance and a large silver Tompion disc regulator (disc numbered 0-25). With chain fusee and worm and wheel barrel. The maker signed champleve silver dial has a Roman numeral hour chapter and an Arabic numeral minute chapter, it has beetle and poker hands. The inner silver split bezel case with later pendant upgrade is serial numbered 3749 to match the movement and case maker stamped WI. For William Jaques , of Angel court Snowhill, a highly esteemed London watch case maker who also made cases for Daniel Quare and Thomas Tompion. The plain outer silver pair case has a seven segment square hinge (which is always a sign of good craftsmanship), a push button catch with a button return back spring. Both cases are in as near to mint condition as you could likely get for a case of this age, the outer case does have a couple of tiny pin holes on the bezel near 4 o clock position which have since been silver soldered within to consolidate. The pocket watch is 58mm (60mm inc hinge) in diameter from left to right. The combined weight of both cases and movement is 163 grammes (5.7ozs). The verge movement is in good strong running order and for a verge of such an early age, it is testament to the makers skills that it is an exceptionally good time keeper. He and his son Thomas were both members of the clock makers company and Joseph sat on committees alongside Thomas Tompion where in 1702 he preceded him as master of the Worshipful company of clock makers. In 1710 he took over the contract to maintain the clocks within the tower of London from Thomas Tompkins. Thomas Windmills entered into partnership with his father sometime between 1686 & 1695 he was made free of the clockmakers company in 1695, during their time together as successful business partners their watch movements were signed’Windmills, London’ prior to their partnership they were signed Jos or J Windmills, London’ and after Josephs death were signed’Tho Windmills, London’. Joseph spent 52 years at his trade before his death, Thomas who was the last of the Windmills male blood line continued to run the business until his death in 1837. Examples of their works can be found in the British museum and many other worldwide horological museums. See J A Neales book on Joseph and Thomas Windmills for comprehensive details. William Jaques (active 1679 died 1719) was a specialist watch case maker who served the first part of his apprentiship under John Wright Senior and the later part of his apprentiship under Nethaniel Delander. Jaques became free of the worshipful company of clock making in 1687 and later went on to serve as master of the Worshipful company of clock making in 1716. He has been described by watch historians as one of the leading London case makers at the end of the late seventeenth century, making cases not only for Windmills but other watch makers including Tompion, Quare, Decharmes and Bushman, examples of his work can be found in museums around the world including the British museum and the metropolitan museum of art, whilst some of his watch cases are fine and elaborate, many of them are noted to be plain, however the latter are generally robust, well hinged and split bezelled. When he died the business was carried on by his widow Sarah who went into parterniship with case maker John Lee a former apprentice of Jaques. See J A Neales book on Windmills for further details. Watch key and new wooden presentation box included. Add me to your. The item “C1706 JOSEPH WINDMILLS LONDON LARGE SILVER PAIR CASE VERGE FUSEE POCKET WATCH” is in sale since Monday, August 21, 2017. THREE HANDS ARE NICE. THIS IS A BEAUTIFUL WATCH GREAT FOR YOUR COLLECTION. A Quick History of the Elgin National Watch Company. Elgin was founded in 1864, right as the civil war was coming to an end. The first watch Elgin made, an 18 sized B W Raymond railroad grade watch, was finished in 1867 and over the next 100 years, they went on to produce about 60 million watches. Elgin produced their first wristwatch around 1910, leading most other American watch companies by many years. Elgin was originally called the “National Watch Company”. The name never really stuck and in 1874, they changed their name to the “Elgin National Watch Company” because most of the watch trade and public were calling them “watches from Elgin”. They kept that name until the late 1960s when they stopped producing watches and changed their name to the “Elgin National Industries”. Elgin was founded on the idea of mass producing high quality pocket watches using machine made, interchangeable parts. Up until around 1850, watches were made mostly by hand, which meant that if a part broke, you had to find someone with the tools and skill to make a new part. Elgin never made the very highest quality watches in the world, nor did they make the very cheapest, but together with Waltham (aka The American Watch Company), they dominated the vast middle ground of the watch market. Today, collecting Elgin watches is quite popular. Because Elgin produced so many watches and produced so many spare parts, they can still be easily bought and fixed, so even a 100 year old Elgin can be used, with care, on a daily basis. While mechanical watches can’t compete with quartz watches for accuracy, there is something about having a watch that ticks that a quartz watch just can’t replace. The incorporators were Philo Carpenter, Howard Z. In September of 1864 a visit was made by some company representatives to the Waltham Watch Co. And seven of their key people where lured away to work for the newly formed company and they were nicknamed the Seven Stars. Since turn about is fair play, Elgin lost several of the Seven Stars to the Illinois Watch Co. A few years later in 1869. The Seven Stars were all machinists first and watchmakers second. One of these men was Charles S. Moseley and he became the factory’s first superintendent. He had been in the watch business since 1852. The Elgin businessmen had been informed that if they wanted the company to be located in Elgin they would have to donate 35 acres of land. The requested location for the company was on a farm with absentee owners. The first movement was delivered from the factory April 1, 1867 and was named in honor of Benjamin W. It was an 18 size, key wind, and full plate, with quick train and straight-line escapement arranged to set on the face and was adjusted to temperature. At that time watches took six months to complete and the B. On July 16, 1867, a new watch was made and it was named the H. The slow train was then adopted on all the new movements brought out and they appeared on the market as follows; J. Ryerson, October 14, 1867; H. Taylor, November 20, 1867; G. Wheeler, November 26, 1867 and Matthew Laflin, January 2, 1868. Laflin and Ryerson both sat on the Elgin’s board of directors and Laflin’s family did so for more than 70 years. On May 20, 1869 the first “Lady Elgin” made its appearance and was the first of a series of 10 size movements and it was also key wind. This was followed on August 24, 1870 by the Francis Rubie, which was adjusted to temperature, on September 8, 1871 by the Gail Borden (of Elsie fame) and on December 20, 1871 by the Dexter Street. The customer would pick out the case of his choice, add the dial and then the jeweler would put them together. The first stem wind movement was placed on the market June 28, 1873. On May 12, 1874 during a special stockholder’s meeting held in Chicago, the name of the company was changed to The Elgin National Watch Company. This was thought to be advisable because the movements manufactured by the company were universally known as and called “Elgin Watches” or the “Watch from Elgin”. In 1888 the factory was producing about 7,500 movements per week, about one fifth of which were key wind and one tenth of the movements were nickel. The factory had 2,300 employees at this time and they were split 50/50 between men and women but not so their pay. During World War I the United States Army had the Elgin factory train more than 350 men to make the precision repairs required in the battlefields. It was during the Second World War that all civilian work was stopped and Elgin made military watches, chronometers for the U. Navy, fuses for artillery shells, altimeters and instruments for aircraft and sapphire bearings used in the aiming of cannon. The Elgin Company was awarded ten Army-Navy “E” awards, for full filling contracts ahead of schedule. The Elgin Company diversified after World War II making decorator clocks, transistor radios, wedding rings, but the heart’s beat was the Elgin watch. That heart beat had been getting slower every year and Elgin ceased to depend on the watch factory as its main enterprise. The clock tower of the National Street plant was torn down October 7, 1966. The world’s largest watch manufacturing complex was located in several buildings from its inception in 1864 until the last Elgin movement made in the United States was completed in Elgin, South Carolina, in 1968. RARE Large SAN FRANCISCO Pocket Watch 18K CALIFORNIA GOLD RUSH CASE 1860s

This is truly a rare timepiece. It is a mans keywnid hunter cased watch, and measures 57mm in diameter. It weighs a total of 169.5 grams.. A massive watch with lots of gold! The case has engine turned lids, and is stamped on both lids JOSEPH BROTHERS, CALIFORNIA GOLD. It is also stamped with an 18K gold mark featuring a bear. The inner back lid is engraved with a June 1863 San Francisco inscription. The porcelain dial is excellent, with one faint, light hairline. The dial is signed CHAS. HOLLINGSIDE, LONDON, 10041 and ADJUSTED IN HEAT & COLD. The indicator dial at the top functions correctly as the watch winds up and down. The movement is gilt, fusee chain driven, jeweled, and with a compensated balance wheel. It is signed Charles Hollinside, LONDON, 10041. Movement is excellent, and has no signs of abuse. It runs strong, but has not been cleaned or serviced in years. It has a lever escapement. I researched JOSEPH BROTHERS, and they were located on Montgomery St. They are listed as Watchmakers, jewelers, opticians, and general importers. They are best known as a minter of private gold coins in the 1850s. When the US caught gold fever, Joseph Brothers began making some jewelry out of California Gold, along with several other jewelers. I have never seen a watch case marked this way. The English movement is proper and original to this watch case, as Joseph Brothers were originally from Liverpool, and practiced their trade there until smitten with Gold Fever. They remained importers when in San Francisco. I feel this is an historically important watch.
